Fantasy Football/NFL Week 2 Preview

Week 1 in the NFL featured a little bit of everything. There were season-ending injuries, crazy games, a tie, and some Fitzmagic. I don't know if Week 2 will be as wild, but I sure hope so.

Although my fantasy suggestions did pretty well last week, I did not do so hot on my picks. Let's hope Week 2 is better (it probably won't be).

Record
Last Week: 8-8  vs. Spread: 7-8-1  Over/Under: 6-10

Week 1 Fantasy Pick to Click

Quarterback

Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers (vs. KC)

Big Ben put up a clunker last week, throwing three interceptions and fumbling the ball twice against the Browns. However, the Browns defense is much improved, and Ben did still throw for 335 yards and a touchdown. He's a good bet to get back on track (or at least not turn the ball over five times) at home against a defense that gave up 424 yards and three touchdowns to Phillip Rivers last week.

Phillip Rivers, Chargers (vs. BUF)

Speaking of Phil Rivers, he gets to treat himself to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. The Bills allowed three touchdown passes to Joe Flacco last week, so Rivers should be able to tear Buffalo up. If you have a Los Angeles Chargers player (or the LA defense) on your fantasy team, start them Sunday.

Tyrod Taylor, Browns (@ NO)

It was a rough Week 1, but I'm still riding the Tyrod Train. Despite the first-week struggles, Taylor still put up decent fantasy numbers, largely thanks to his legs. The Browns offense should be better in Week 2 (one would hope), and they're playing a Saints defense that gave up 48 points to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Running Back

James Connor, Steelers (vs. KC)

Not only am I still riding the Tyrod Train, I'm still in the Connor Car, and for good reason. The second-year back out of Pittsburgh had 36 touches last week, turning those into 192 total yards and two touchdowns. Le'Veon Bell still hasn't reported, so expect Connor to once again have a heavy workload against a Kansas City defense that gave up 166 total yards to Melvin Gordon last week.

Chris Thompson, Redskins (vs. IND)

Adrian Peterson may be the early-down back in Washington, but Thompson still has a big role in the offense. Thompson had 128 total yards and a touchdown last week against Arizona, and this week he faces a Colts defense that allowed 149 total yards and a touchdown to Joe Mixon last Sunday.

Dion Lewis, Titans (vs. HOU)

The Derrick Henry-Dion Lewis timeshare leaned heavily towards Lewis in Week 1, as he had 16 carries (and five catches) to Henry's 10 carries (and one catch). Lewis also did more with those carries, accumulating 75 yards and a touchdown (Henry ran for 26 yards). Houston allowed 122 rushing yards and a receiving touchdown from a running back last week against New England.

Wide Receiver

Emmanuel Sanders, Broncos (vs. OAK)

Sanders and new quarterback Case Keenum connected 10 times in Week 1, with Emmanuel racking up 135 yards and a touchdown against Seattle. Keenum will likely target Sanders a lot again this week, against an Oakland defense that gave up 86 yards and a score to Rams slot receivers Monday.

Josh Gordon, Browns (@ NO)

Gordon was expected to be somewhat limited last Sunday after not playing in a preseason game, but he ended up playing quite a bit. Despite that, he was only targeted three times. One of those targets, however, turned into a touchdown. Gordon figures to be more involved this week against a Saints defense that gave up 417 yards and four touchdowns from Tampa Bay receivers last week.

Nelson Agholor, Buccaneers (@ TB)

With Alshon Jeffery out, Agholor is the number one receiver for Philly, and although he didn't put up big numbers in Week 1, he did have a team-leading eight catches (for 33 yards), a 16-yard run and a 15-yard pass. Although Tampa torched the New Orleans defense, they couldn't stop the Saints offense. allowing 439 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Tight End

Jack Doyle, Colts (@ WAS)

In Andrew Luck's first game in a year and a half, he targeted Jack Doyle 10 times. Doyle had seven catches for 60 yards (along with a game-losing fumble), leading the team in receiving yards. If Luck still trusts him after the back-breaking fumble, he should find plenty of room against Washington.

Jared Cook, Raiders (@ DEN)

The Jared Cook revival was in full effect of Monday night, as the veteran pass-catcher had nine receptions for 180 yards in Oakland's loss to the Rams. He seems to be the clear focal point of this passing offense, and there's no reason to think he won't be heavily involved again this week.

Benjamin Watson, Saints (vs. CLE)

In the weekly "tight end facing the Browns" slot, we have solid veteran Ben Watson. Watson had four catches for 44 yards last week. Meanwhile, Cleveland allowed 3 catches for 60 yards from Steelers tight end Jesse James. Watson will find some openings Sunday.

Defense

Los Angeles Chargers (@ BUF)

The Bolts won't get the pleasure of facing Nathan Peterman, but they will get to see rookie Josh Allen, who will be making his first regular season NFL start.

New England Patriots (@ JAX)

The Jaguars, who already relied heavily on their defense, could now be without their best offensive player (Leonard Fournette). The possible absence of Fournette, coupled with the fact that Blake Bortles could be throwing the ball lot, equals a good game for the Patriot defense.

New York Jets (vs. MIA)

Are the J-E-T-S B-A-C-K? It sure looked like it Monday Night, when the New York defense picked off Matthew Stafford five times. The Dolphins are nobody's idea of an offensive juggernaut, so it's very possible the the strong start from the Jets could continue.

Week 2 Game Picks

Thursday

Ravens @ Bengals (8:20 PM, NFL Network)

Baltimore had a bye week played Nathan Peterman and the Bills last week, coasting to an easy victory. Meanwhile, Cincy escaped Indianapolis with a win thanks to a late fumble. I could see this being a hard-fought battle between the division rivals. I'll go with the hosts.

Spread: BAL -1  Over/Under: 44

Prediction: Bengals 24, Ravens 17

Sunday

Vikings @ Packers (1:00 PM, FOX)

Aaron Rodgers. I think that's all I need to say about that. However, the Vikings are a better overall team than the Packers. I would never bet against A-Rodg, but I would bet against the Green Bay Packers.

Spread: GB -1  Over/Under: 46.5

Prediction: Vikings 31, Packers 27

Browns @ Saints (1:00 PM, FOX)

One of these teams is coming into this game unbeaten. The other got torn up by Ryan Fitzpatrick. Neither team has a win. Cleveland's defense looked good in Week 1, but they might have a hard time stopping the extremely talented Saints offense. The key matchup will be the Cleveland offense vs. the New Orleans defense. Both struggled last week. I'm going to go with the smart pick.

Spread: NO -9  Over/Under: 49

Prediction: Saints 34, Browns 24

Dolphins @ Jets (1:00 PM, CBS)

Both of these teams are coming off of surprising (at least in my opinion) wins. The Jets looked much more impressive in their win. The defense terrorized Detroit, and Sam Darnold did not look like someone making his first NFL start (other than the first play). I'll keep riding with New York.

Spread: NYJ -3  Over/Under: 43.5

Prediction: Jets 20, Dolphins 10

Chargers @ Bills (1:00 PM, CBS)

Phil Rivers and the Chargers couldn't get past the Chiefs last week, but now they face the worst team in the league. The Bills should be better after ending the Nathan Peterman Experiment, but Josh Allen is raw and inexperienced. Chargers in a rout.

Spread: LAC -7  Over/Under: 43

Prediction: Chargers 38, Bills 13

Panthers @ Falcons (1:00 PM, FOX)

Atlanta fell just short last Thursday night, as Matt Ryan (once again) couldn't get it to Julio Jones in the end zone. Carolina took care of the Cowboys last week, but this week will be a tougher test. I think Cam and the Panthers outlast Ryan and the Falcons on the road.

Spread: ATL -6  Over/Under: 44.5

Prediction: Panthers 32, Falcons 28

Chiefs @ Steelers (1:00 PM, CBS)

The Steelers are going to need to play a lot better than they did last week, especially against a dangerous Kansas City offense. I think they will at home against a suspect Chiefs defense. This could be a shootout between two talented offenses. I'm going with KC to take one on the road.

Spread: PIT -4.5  Over/Under: 53

Prediction: Chiefs 38, Steelers 31

Colts @ Redskins (1:00 PM, CBS)

The Colts almost won in Andrew Luck's return, but fell short at home against Cincinnati. Washington cruised past Arizona in Alex Smith's debut. Indianapolis didn't play badly in Week 1, but the Colts need to limit mistakes and find away to stop the short and intermediate passing game. I think they'll struggle against Chris Thompson and company.

Spread: WAS -6  Over/Under: 48

Prediction: Redskins 27, Colts 20

Texans @ Titans (1:00 PM, CBS)

Deshaun Watson was a bit rusty in his return from injury, but Houston still had a chance against New England last week. The Titans lost Marcus Mariota last week (he's expected to play this week), and Blaine Gabbert had no chance against Miami. Tennessee is banged up everywhere (Delanie Walker is out for the year), making a win over Houston a daunting task, even at home.

Spread: HOU -2  Over/Under: 44.5

Prediction: Texans 30, Titans 17

Eagles @ Buccaneers (1:00 PM, FOX)

It's the Backup Quarterback Bowl, as Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles faces off against NFL passing leading Ryan Fitzpatrick. I don't expect a repeat of last week's Fitz-magical game for the Bucs, but I also doubt we'll see the Philly Special 3.0. The Eagles are the better all-around team.

Spread: PHI -3  Over/Under: 44

Prediction: Eagles 23, Buccaneers 14

Cardinals @ Rams (4:05 PM, FOX)

The loaded Rams got off to a slow start against Oakland Monday night, then got it going and cruised to a blowout victory. Arizona got off to a slow start and slow finish. I see no way the Cardinals win this game, unless Sam Bradford pulls a Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Spread: LAR -13  Over/Under: 45

Prediction: Rams 42, Cardinals 21

Lions @ 49ers (4:05 PM, FOX)

I expect Matthew Stafford to play better after a forgettable Week 1 (it'd be hard for him to play worse). I also expect San Francisco to play better after hanging with the talented Vikings last week. I'm going to go with the hosts out west.

Spread: SF -6  Over/Under: 48

Prediction: 49ers 28, Lions 21

Raiders @ Broncos (4:25 PM, CBS)

Jon Gruden's return to the sideline got off to a good start, but had a predictably poor ending. The Broncos aren't the Rams, but Denver's defense, which includes elite pass-rusher Von Miller (too bad the Raiders don't have an elite pass-rusher), will be a challenge for Derek Carr and company. Also, punts don't often provide much entertainment value, but they might in this game. Denver punter Marquette King may have some celebrations ready for Sunday's game against the guy who cut him.

Spread: DEN -6  Over/Under: 45.5

Prediction: Broncos 24, Raiders 14

Patriots @ Jaguars (4:25 PM, CBS)

We get a rematch of last season's AFC Championship game in the late afternoon time slot. New England won that game, 24-20, and Jacksonville hasn't greatly improved since then (in fact, the Jags' leading receiver from that game is gone, and their leading rusher is a game-time decision). The Pats also no longer have their leading receiver and leading rusher from that game, but they do have Tom Brady. This could be a tight one, but it's hard to go against Bill Belichick's squad.

Spread: NE -1  Over/Under: 45.5

Prediction: Patriots 24, Jaguars 21

Giants @ Cowboys (8:20 PM, NBC)

Week 2 brings us our first Giants-Cowboys game of the season (a game that is always on Sunday Night Football). Both teams started off with losses against good teams, and both teams have talented running backs. I'll go with the host 'Boys in a close one.

Spread: DAL -3  Over/Under: 42.5

Prediction: Cowboys 28, Giants 24

Monday

Seahawks @ Bears (8:15 PM, ESPN)

The Monsters of the Midway are in Primetime again this week, as they host the struggling Seahawks. The Bears looked good in Week 1, but unfortunately, they were playing Aaron Rodgers, so it didn't end in a desired result for them. I think this week will. The Seattle offensive line will have fits with Khalil Mack and Roquan Smith.

Spread: CHI -3.5  Over/Under: 43

Prediction: Bears 27, Seahawks 17

College Football Week 2 Preview

So... like Florida State, Michigan and several others, I did not get off to a great start to the season. It's been awhile since I last made college football picks, so maybe I'm just a little rusty. Or maybe I'm just not very good at predicting college football games. If you bet on college football game last weekend using my advice (and you lost), I apologize. Although, you should have known better than to use my picks to bet on games. I don't even do that.

Well, let's hope Week 2 brings a little more luck than Week 1 did. The matchups won't get any easier to pick, though, especially as we move away from the "cupcake" games.

Record
Last Week: 17-4   vs. Spread: 8-9   Over/Under: 10-7

Friday

#18 TCU @ SMU (8:00 PM, ESPN2)

Before their big showdown with Ohio State next week, the Horned Frogs travel to Dallas to face off with another religious school that goes by a three-letter acronym. TCU easily disposed of Southern University last week. Meanwhile, SMU lost to North Texas. Shawn Robinson and the Frogs should stand at 2-0 when they welcome the Buckeyes next Saturday.

Spread: TCU -23.5  Over/Under: 60

Prediction: TCU 45, SMU 19

Saturday

New Mexico @ #5 Wisconsin (Noon, Big Ten Network)

Both the Badgers and Lobos started their seasons off with easy wins against inferior opponents. New Mexico is hoping to bounce back from a 3-9 season. Wisconsin is hoping to compete for a National title. The Badgers are far superior.

Spread: WIS -35  Over/Under: 60

Prediction: Wisconsin 52, New Mexico 20

#18 Mississippi State @ Kansas State (Noon, ESPN)

After serving a one-game suspension, Nick Fitzgerald is back under center for Mississippi State, and the Bulldogs might need him against Kansas State, which is a better team than Stephen F. Austin. The host Wildcats could give the 'dogs a run for their money, but I expect Fitzgerald and company to leave Bill Snyder Stadium with a victory.

Spread: MSU -8  Over/Under: 54

Prediction: Mississippi State 35, Kansas State 28

Western Michigan @ #21 Michigan (Noon, Fox Sports 1)

Trying to bounce back from a first week loss to Notre Dame, Michigan hosts in-state foe Western Michigan. The Wolverine offense should look better than it did against the Irish. The Broncos gave up 55 points in a loss to Syracuse. In past years, I could see Western giving Michigan a scare. Not this year, though. Jim Harbaugh's squad should get its first win of the season.

Spread: MICH -28  Over/Under: 56

Prediction: Michigan 32, Western Michigan 13

UCLA @ #6 Oklahoma (1:00 PM, FOX)

Chip Kelly's UCLA tenure did not get off to a good start, as the Bruins lost to Cincinnati last week. It won't get any easier this week against Kyler Murray and a talented Sooner squad. Oklahoma thrashed Lane Kiffin's FAU squad last week, 63-14. Chip Kelly and the Bruins could be in for a thrashing this week in Norman.

Spread: OKLA -30  Over/Under: 64

Prediction: Oklahoma 52, UCLA 14

William & Mary @ #12 Virginia Tech (2:00 PM, ACC Network)

Remember when I said that we were getting away from "cupcake" games? Yeah, I was wrong. After a resounding win against Florida State on Labor Day, the Hokies get a reprieve in the form of FCS school William & Mary. Virginia Tech won't literally be playing two people named William & Mary, but you might not be able to tell by the final score.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 42, William & Mary 0

Portland State @ #23 Oregon (2:00 PM, PAC-12 Network)

The cupcakes continue. Oregon plays host to in-state FCS foe Portland State, which lost to Nevada last week, 72-19. If the Vikings gave up 72 points to Nevada, imagine how many points the high-flying ducks, who put up 58 on Bowling Green last week, will score. A lot. They'll score a lot.

Prediction: Oregon 62, Portland State 7

Arkansas State @ #1 Alabama (3:30 PM, ESPN2)

A week after smashing Louisville, the defending champs face the Sun Belt's Arkansas State Red Wolves. Both Tua Tagavailoa and Jalen Hurts figure to get time at quarterback this Saturday, but after last week, it looks like Tua is the clear starter. It doesn't matter who plays quarterback this week. The Tide will role regardless.

Spread: ALA -37  Over/Under: 66

Prediction: Alabama 48, Arkansas State 14

#3 Georgia @ #24 South Carolina (3:30 PM, CBS)

Finally, we get away from the cupcakes (don't worry, we'll return to them). In the first of this week's two matchups between ranked teams, third-ranked Georgia travels to Columbia. Although they're on the road, the Bulldogs are favored by over 10 points against the up-and-coming Gamecocks. I also like the defending runners-up by over 10 points.

Spread: UGA -10.5  Over/Under: 56

Prediction: Georgia 32, South Carolina 21

Rutgers @ #4 Ohio State (3:30 PM, BTN)

Ah, back to the cupcakes. Although this is technically a conference games, Rutgers doesn't stand much of a chance against Heisman Trophy candidate Dwayne Haskins and the Buckeyes. The Scarlet Knights may find some room to run against OSU's secondary, but good luck stopping the offense.

Spread: OSU -35  Over/Under: 63

Prediction: Ohio State 60, Rutgers 21

Ball State @ #8 Notre Dame (3:30 PM, NBC)

Another in-state battle that probably won't be close. The Cardinals will be pumped up and ready to play the Fighting Irish in South Bend, but Notre Dame, coming off a big win over Michigan, are by far the more talented team.

Spread: ND -34.5  Over/Under: 62

Prediction: Notre Dame 38, Ball State 10

North Dakota @ #9 Washington (5:00 PM, PAC-12)

After a disappointing first-week loss to Auburn, Washington can take out its anger on North Dakota. The Husky offense, which struggled with miscues in a 21-16 loss to Auburn, can work some things out against this FCS opponent. This one won't be close.

Prediction: Washington 52, North Dakota 3

Youngstown State @ #14 West Virginia (6:00 PM)

A week after an impressive drubbing of Tennessee by Will Grier and West Virginia, the Mountaineers host Youngstown State. The Penguins are a good FCS team, but they lost to Butler last week (in football, not basketball). Grier, who had 429 yards and five touchdowns last week, should continue his Heisman campaign at home this week.

Prediction: West Virginia 45, Youngstown State 14

South Carolina State @ #19 UCF (6:00 PM, ESPN3)

The Knights of Central Florida, who haven't lost in many moons, smashed UConn last week. Quarterback McKenzie Milton matched the other Heisman candidates with five touchdowns, and he'll probably throw five more this week against a South Carolina State team that lost to Georgia Southern 37-6 last Saturday.

Prediction: UCF 56, South Carolina State 6

Savannah State @ #22 Miami (6:00 PM, ACCN)

I like cupcakes (the food), but this is too much. After getting schooled at home by LSU last Sunday, the Hurricanes can work out their problems against another school nicknamed the Tigers. This one is an FCS school that got shutout by UAB (52-0) last week.

Prediction: Miami 62, Savannah State 0

#2 Clemson @ Texas A&M (7:00 PM, ESPN)

Dabo Swinney and the Tigers must be wary of Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies this weekend. Texas A&M isn't a bad team, and the atmosphere in Kyle Field will surely be electric. Plus, Clemson has some uncertainty at quarterback after freshman Trevor Lawrence outplayed senior incumbent Kelly Bryant last week. However, there is no uncertainty with the Tiger defense, which will cause problems for the Aggies.

Spread: CLEM -12.5  Over/Under: 53

Prediction: Clemson 31, Texas A&M 17

Southeastern Louisiana @ #11 LSU (7:00 PM, ESPN2)

Yet another in-state game that won't be close. The Tiger defense balled out against Miami last Sunday, and Joe Burrow looked solid in his first start at quarterback. LSU will destroy poor Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday night.

Prediction: LSU 42, Southeastern Louisiana 10

Alabama State @ #7 Auburn (7:30 PM, SEC Network)

Luckily for Auburn, there is a "State" after Alabama here. The Tigers kicked off the season with a top-ten victory, beating Washington, 21-16. This will not be a top-ten win (it won't even be a top-120 win, as the Hornets are an FCS team), but it'll be a win.

Prediction: Auburn 48, Alabama State 0

Kentucky @ #25 Florida (7:30 PM, SECN)

Kentucky heads to Gainesville hoping to beat the Gators for the first time in (*does the math*) 32 YEARS. The Wildcats have fallen victim to the Gators 31 straight times. Kentucky has a shot at breaking the streak this year, but Florida is still the more talented team. The skid will extend to 33 years without a victory over Florida for Kentucky.

Spread: FLA -14  Over/Under: 51

Prediction: Florida 35, Kentucky 19

#13 Penn State @ Pittsburgh (8:00 PM, ABC)

If you look up "Trap Game" in the dictionary, you will find this game (just kidding, "Trap Game" isn't in the dictionary). After the Nittany Lions escaped what would've been a disastrous upset loss to App State last week, they travel to Heinz Field to battle their in-state rival. At the end of last season, Pitt upended #2 Miami. In 2016, the Panthers shocked #2 Clemson (and beat Penn State). But I think #13 Penn State will hold them off.

Spread: PSU -9  Over/Under: 55

Prediction: Penn State 40, Pittsburgh 32

#17 USC @ #10 Stanford (8:30 PM, FOX)

The game of the week (in my eyes) feature two PAC-12 heavyweights out in California. Stanford quarterback K. J. Costello tore up San Diego State last week, throwing for 332 yards and four touchdowns. JT Daniels didn't have quite as gaudy numbers in his first start replacing Sam Darnold, but he put up a respectable 282 yards and one touchdown in a win over UNLV. Star Stanford running back Bryce Love struggled last week, but he should get it going Saturday. I think Stanford's experience at important positions will win out in the end.

Spread: STAN -6  Over/Under: 56

Prediction: Stanford 31, USC 24

UConn @ #20 Boise State (10:15 PM, ESPNU)

Connecticut got thumped by UCF last Thursday night. Boise State thumped Troy last Saturday. The Huskies, who couldn't stop McKenzie Milton last week, will have a hard time stopping Brett Rypien this week. The Blue-Field Broncos should stampede the Huskies.

Spread: BSU -31.5  Over/Under: 64

Prediction: Boise State 55, Connecticut 20

#15 Michigan State @ Arizona State (10:45 PM, ESPN)

The night ends with some #Pac12AfterDark, as Arizona State hosts 15th-ranked Michigan State. The Spartans barely escaped Utah State last week, and they don't have the look of a top-15 team. The Sun Devils, under new coach Herm Edwards, are just the team that could provide a shocker out west late Saturday night (early Sunday morning eastern time).

Spread: MSU -5  Over/Under: 54

Prediction: Arizona State 34, Michigan State 31

Fantasy Football/NFL Week 1 Preview

The NFL is back, but more importantly for many people, FANTASY FOOTBALL IS BACK. The 2018 season kicks off tonight in Philly, and I have you covered with some players I like in fantasy this week, along with my game picks.

Before I begin, I just want to give a shoutout to Nike and Colin Kaepernick. I love Nike's inspirational new ad campaign that features athletes such as Kaepernick, Serena Williams and OBJ, and I love that Kaepernick, who is a great humanitarian and role model (as well as a decent football player), is the face of it. Kudos to them.

Alright, let's get started...

With Le'Veon Bell still holding out, James Connor gets a chance this weekend

Week 1 Fantasy Picks to Click

Quarterback

Deshaun Watson, HOU (@ NE)

Yes, Watson is coming back from a torn ACL that he suffered in practice midway through the 2017 season, but he looks healthy, and he was putting up prolific numbers before getting hurt. Last year, Watson threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns (along with two interceptions) in a 33-36 Texans loss. I expect another shootout this time, perhaps with better results for Watson.

Tyrod Taylor, CLE (vs. PIT)

You may have heard me say this before, but Tyrod Taylor is the most underrated quarterback in the NFL. Taylor is known as a conservative quarterback (which usually equates to a low-ceiling fantasy quarterback), but he did finish in the top ten in fantasy points per game in 2015 and 2016, and that was with a Buffalo offense that had nowhere near the weapons the 2018 Browns have. Tyrod could be a top ten fantasy quarterback in Cleveland.

Andy Dalton, CIN (@ IND)

Unlike Watson and Taylor, Dalton isn't somebody I would keep on my fantasy team all season, but he is someone to look at if you need a quarterback for Week 1, or want a low-cost daily fantasy quarterback. The Colts were not great against the pass last season, and they let their best defensive back (Reshaan Melvin) go during the offseason. A.J. Green and John Ross will tear up that secondary this weekend, which could make Dalton an under-the-radar fantasy option.

Running Back

Melvin Gordon, LAC (vs. KC)

The man they call Melvin (because that's his name) will once again be the workhorse back for the Chargers. He was one of the best running backs in fantasy last season, partly thanks to his heavy usage. He will probably be heavily used again this year, especially against Kansas City's suspect defense. In his last meeting with the Chiefs (December 16 of 2017), Gordon ran for 78 yards (and a touchdown) and caught six passes for 91 yards.

James Connor, PIT (@ CLE)

Now that Le'Veon Bell has been officially ruled out for Week 1 (as he continues his holdout in search of a new contract), Connor is someone to consider picking up on the waiver wire. Bell was one of the most heavily used running backs in the league, so Connor is appealing based off volume alone in this prolific offense. As long as Le'Veon is out, Connor is a must-add in fantasy.

Wide Receiver

Jarvis Landry, CLE (vs. PIT)

I'm all in on Landry this season. The best slot receiver in the NFL has been one of the most heavily-targeted players in the NFL the last few seasons. After being traded from Miami to Cleveland in the offseason, he'll probably be targeted less, but this is potentially the best offense he's ever had, and it looks like he'll be used more in the deep passing game than he was in Miami.

Corey Davis, TEN (@ MIA)

The second-year receiver out of Western Michigan is entrenched as Tennessee's number one receiver to start the season. Davis is poised for a breakout season, especially if quarterback Marcus Mariota takes a step forward. Davis should get a lot of action Sunday against a porous Miami defense.

Jamison Crowder, WAS (@ ARI)

Another heavily-targeted receiver, Crowder could become new quarterback Alex Smith's best friend. In an offense without a true number one receiving option, Smith will probably lean on Crowder a lot, especially Sunday against Patrick Peterson (who probably won't be covering Crowder in the slot) and the Cardinals.
Tight End

David Njoku, CLE (vs. PIT)

If you can't tell, I'm excited about the Browns this season. This could be a breakout season for the second-year tight end out of Miami. Tyrod Taylor likes his tight ends (see Clay, Charles), and Njoku had a very good preseason. The Steelers aren't the "Steel Curtain" of old, so Njoku should be able to find some room to make plays Sunday.

Antonio Gates, LAC (vs. KC)

The 38-year-old is back with the Chargers after signing with them recently. He'll again be Phillip Rivers' top tight end, with Hunter Henry out for the season. The Chiefs were 29th in the NFL against the pass last season, and they're currently banged up in the secondary. Rivers might look to his old companion more than a few times on Sunday.

Jesse James, PIT (@ CLE)

On the other side of the field, we have Jesse James, who would not show up in this article if he wasn't playing the Browns. Although the Steelers also have Vance McDonald, he's currently battling an injury, so James will likely get the majority of the snaps at tight end. Last season, James scored two touchdowns against Cleveland in Week 1. The Browns were the worst team in the NFL against tight ends last season, and until that trend ends, I'll continue to put the opposing tight end here.

Defense

Baltimore Ravens (vs. BUF)

Two words: Nathan Peterman. Five more words: The Buffalo Bills offensive line.

Tennessee Titans (@ MIA)

The Dolphins traded away leading receiver Jarvis Landry, and Devante Parker is doubtful to go Sunday. So Miami's top receivers this week will be Kenny Stills, Danny Amendola and Albert Wilson. 80-year-old Frank Gore will team up with former backup Kenyan Drake at running back, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be playing for the first time in two years. I like Tennessee's chances.

Detroit Lions (vs. NYJ)

The Lions will be facing a rookie quarterback on Monday Night Football. Sam Darnold looked good during the preseason, and the Jets don't have a horrible offense, but Darnold did have turnover problems in college, and he might have some nerves playing his first regular season NFL game on the road in primetime.

Week 1 Game Picks

Thursday

Falcons @ Eagles (8:20 PM, NBC)

The 2018 NFL season kicks off in Philadelphia, home of the defending Super Bowl champions. Although the Eagles will have the same quarterback that they had against New England in February (Carson Wentz will miss at least the first week or two), expect Nick Foles to look more like what Nick Foles looked like before last season's magical playoff run. I think the opener will go to Atlanta.

Spread: ATL -1  Over/Under: 45

Prediction: Falcons 24, Eagles 14

Sunday

Steelers @ Browns (1:00 PM, CBS)

The last time the Browns won their first game of the season? 2004. Ben Roethlisberger is 21-2 against Cleveland in his career, and even without Le'Veon Bell, the Steelers are favored to beat the Browns again. There's a different feel to this year's Browns, however. I'm going against the grain and picking a Cleveland victory. Is this a smart pick? Probably not.

Spread: PIT -4.5  Over/Under: 44

Prediction: Browns 31, Steelers 28

Bengals @ Colts (1:00 PM, CBS)

It's been 19 months since Andrew Luck last played in an NFL regular season game, but he will be under center for Indianapolis Sunday at home against Cincinnati. He'll be playing behind a better offensive line, one that includes first-round pick Quenton Nelson. The key matchup in this game may be the Indy line vs. Cincy's pass rushers, which include Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap and Carl Lawson. I think Luck might show some rust, and I think the Bengals will take advantage.

Spread: IND -3  Over/Under: 48

Prediction: Bengals 21, Colts 17

Titans @ Dolphins (1:00 PM, FOX)

Speaking of quarterbacks playing for the first time in a long time, Ryan Tannehill returns for the Dolphins on Sunday. The offense around him will look a lot different (and not in a good way). The Titans, headed by new coach Mike Vrabel, are hoping Marcus Mariota has a breakout season playing for a new offensive coordinator. Breakout or not, Tennessee should emerge victorious.

Spread: TEN -1.5  Over/Under: 45

Prediction: Titans 31, Dolphins 13

49ers @ Vikings (1:00 PM, FOX)

It's Super Bowl or bust this season in Minnesota. After coming close to the big game last season (when it was played in Minnesota), the Vikings nabbed the big fish on the free agent market (Kirk Cousins). His addition to a strong offense, along with an already-elite defense, make this a dangerous team. the Niners are unbeaten with Jimmy G at quarterback, but I think that run ends this week.

Spread: MIN -6.5  Over/Under: 46

Prediction: Vikings 35, 49ers 20

Texans @ Patriots (1:00 PM, FOX)

This should be an intriguing battle. Deshaun Watson and J.J. Watt are back and healthy for the Texans, while Tom Brady and Gronk are back for the defending Super Bowl runners-up. Brady will be without Julian Edelman, and he'll be up against a defense that features Watt, Jadeveon Clowney and new addition Tyrann Matieu, among others. I'm calling for an upset in Foxborough.

Spread: NE -6.5  Over/Under: 51

Prediction: Texans 34, Patriots 31

Buccaneers @ Saints (1:00 PM, FOX)

The Bucs will be without quarterback Jameis Winston for the first three games, so Ryan Fitzpatrick will get the start. The journeyman from Harvard will not face an easy first test, as Tampa faces off with a talented New Orleans defense that includes last season's Defensive Rookie of the Year, Marshon Lattimore. The Saints will also be without a key offensive player (Mark Ingram), but Alvin Kamara, the Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, can fill that hole. Saints in a rout.

Spread: NO -10  Over/Under: 49.5

Prediction: Saints 38, Buccaneers 14

Jaguars @ Giants (1:00 PM, FOX)

The Jags are hoping to get to the Super Bowl this year, behind an elite defense that got them to the AFC Championship last season. The Giants are hoping for better things this year too, after they had a rough 2017. New York has second overall pick Saquon Barkley and a healthy Odell Beckham Jr. to help Eli Manning out, along with talented young tight end Evan Engram. The Giants are probably feeling pretty good right now, and I think that could propel them to an upset on Sunday.

Spread: JAX -3  Over/Under: 43.5

Prediction: Giants 23, Jaguars 17

Bills @ Ravens (1:00 PM, CBS)

Josh Allen isn't ready, so Nathan Peterman (yes, the Nathan Peterman who infamously threw five interceptions in one half after the Bills decided to start him over Tyrod Taylor for some reason) will get the start. He won't have much to help him, other than LeSean McCoy. Joe Flacco will have a little more to help him, including Alex Collins, John Brown, Michael Crabtree and Willie Snead IV... and Nathan Peterman.

Spread: BAL -7.5  Over/Under: 40.5

Prediction: Ravens 17, Bills 3

Chiefs @ Chargers (4:05 PM, CBS)

This should be a fun game. We get to see Patty Mahomes and the stacked Kansas City offense against the vaunted Charger defense. The rocket-launching Mahomes looked good in the preseason, and he'll have plenty of weapons at his disposal. Phillip Rivers and the Charger offense should have some success against Kansas City' defense, but these are the Chargers, so I'm going to predict a fourth-quarter collapse.

Spread: LAC -3  Over/Under: 48

Prediction: Chiefs 30, Chargers 27

Seahawks @ Broncos (4:25 PM, FOX)

The Broncos will have a new guy under center after signing Case Keenum this offseason. The Seahawks still have Russell Wilson under center, but the offensive line and secondary are areas of concern. The Broncos will have a ferocious pass rush that includes Von Miller and fifth overall pick Bradley Chubb. This could be a defensive battle, which I think favors Denver.

Spread: DEN -3  Over/Under: 42.5

Prediction: Broncos 20, Seahawks 14

Redskins @ Cardinals (4:25 PM, FOX)

Washington, like Kansas City, has a new face at quarterback, and that face is Kansas City's old quarterback. Alex Smith won't have the supporting cast he had in KC, but he has players like Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson and Chris Thompson. David Johnson is back and healthy for the Cardinals, who will trot out Sam Bradford at quarterback. Bradford has shown that he's decent when healthy, and Johnson should have room to run.

Spread: ARI -1  Over/Under: 44

Prediction: Cardinals 17, Redskins 14

Cowboys @ Panthers (4:25 PM, FOX)

Dak, Zeke and company will be hoping to bounce back from last season, but the Cowboys might not bounce back until Week 2. The Dallas defense will have some trouble stopping Cam Newton, Christian McCaffrey and company, and the Dallas offense has zero proven wide receivers (unless you consider Allen Hurns a proven wide receiver). Panthers should take this one.

Spread: CAR -3  Over/Under: 42.5

Prediction: Panthers 31, Cowboys 17

Bears @ Packers (8:20 PM, NBC)

This year's version of the oldest rivalry in the NFL should be more interesting than recent years, even though the Packers still have the best QB in football (that would be Aaron Rodgers). The Bears are hoping Mitchell Trubisky can take a Jared Goff-like step forward in his second season, especially with a better supporting cast. Chicago also beefed up its defense with Roquan Smith and Khalil Mack. Despite all that, I'm still going with A-Rod and the Pack. They know what to do with Mack.

Spread: GB -7.5  Over/Under: 47.5

Prediction: Packers 32, Bears 24

Monday

Jets @ Lions (7:10 PM, ESPN)

Sam Darnold's NFL debut will be on Monday night in Detroit. I think we'll see some good things, but I also think we'll see some rookie mistakes. I expect at least one interception (if I had to bet on a player to pick him, it'd obviously be Darius Slay), but at least 150 passing yards and maybe a touchdown. I also expect the Lions to win.

Spread: DET -7  Over/Under: 45

Prediction: Lions 30, Jets 17

Rams @ Raiders (10:15 PM, ESPN)

It's been a tale of two summers for these two teams. The already-rich Rams got richer, acquiring players like Marcus Peters and Brandin Cooks. Meanwhile, Jon Gruden released one of the best punters in the league because of his personality, then traded one of the best pass-rushers in the league because of money. I'm feeling the Rams in a rout.

Spread: LAR -4.5  Over/Under: 49

Prediction: Rams 42, Raiders 20

College Football Week 1 Preview

Image result for michigan vs notre dame 2018
Two teams with a lot of history face off Saturday night (Photo via uhnd.com)

It's finally (officially) back. After seven months of transfers, recruiting commitments and scandals, college football teams are back on the field. Although the NCAA Division I season technically kicked off last week, the real excitement begins this week (sorry Wyoming). The holiday weekend features several intriguing games, including three between AP Top 25 teams.

With the return of college football comes the return of my college football weekly previews. I am not a psychic (though I think I could pass as one if I needed to), but I will attempt to predict the outcome of every game involving a Top 25 team, and I will also try to beat the spread and the over/under on each game. I'm excited for a new season of football. Let's get started.

Thursday

#21 UCF @ UConn (7:00 PM, ESPNU)

The Knights of Central Florida are coming off an undefeated season (and, if you ask them, a "National Championship"). They lost their coach (Scott Frost went back home to Nebraska), but not their star quarterback. McKenzie Milton is a potential Heisman candidate, and he has plenty of talent around him. Meanwhile, Connecticut is coming off its second straight three-win season. This is technically a conference game, but UConn is a cupcake for UCF.

Spread: UCF -24  Over/Under: 70

Prediction: UCF 45, UConn 20

Friday

Utah State @ #11 Michigan State (7:00 PM, Big Ten Network)

The Spartans bring back much of the team that went 10-3 last season, including quarterback Brian Lewerke and running back LJ Scott. Utah State kicks off the season against a ranked Big 10 team for the second straight year. In the first week of the 2017 season, the Aggie got walloped by Wisconsin (59-10). I expect a similar result against Michigan State.

Spread: MSU -23  Over/Under: 50.5

Prediction: Michigan State 52, Utah State 14

Western Kentucky @ #4 Wisconsin (9:00 PM, ESPN)

Speaking of Wisconsin, the Badgers open the 2018-19 season as title contenders. After a 13-1 2017-18 season, Wisconsin gets star running back Jonathan Taylor (who finished third in the nation in rushing yards as a freshman last year) back, along with quarterback Alex Hornibrook and the entire offensive line. The Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky are no match for Wisky.

Spread: WIS -36  Over/Under: 52.5

Prediction: Wisconsin 48, Western Kentucky 6

San Diego State @ #13 Stanford (9:00 PM, Fox Sports 1)

Last season, San Diego State, led by Rashaad Penny, triumphed over Bryce Love and Stanford. Penny is in the NFL now. Love is still in college, and the Heisman hopeful has a formidable offensive line in front of him. The Aztec defense could potentially keep this game close for awhile, but the Cardinal should emerge victorious.

Spread: STAN  -14  Over/Under: 48.5

Prediction: Stanford 28, San Diego State 17

Saturday

Oregon State @ #5 Ohio State (Noon, ABC)

The Buckeyes won't have Urban Meyer for their first three games, but they don't need Urban Meyer with all the talent they have on the field. After 50 years four seasons of J.T. Barrett, Dwayne Haskins takes over at quarterback, but backup Tate Martell is also expected to play. Oregon State is a Power 5 conference team, but the Beavers were 1-11 last season. This battle of OSUs should end in a rout.

Spread: OHIOST -38.5  Over/Under: 64

Prediction: Ohio State 54, Oregon State 13

Florida Atlantic @ #7 Oklahoma (Noon, FOX)

Gone is Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield, who was drafted first overall by the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Draft. In his place is Kyler Murray, who was drafted ninth overall by the Oakland Athletics in the MLB Draft. He signed with the A's, but he will still return for one season in Norman. The extremely athletic Murray will lead a team that should once again contend for a spot in the Playoff. Lane Kiffin has done a good job at FAU, coaching them to an 11-3 record last season, but the Owls don't have the talent to match the Sooners.

Spread: OKLA -21  Over/Under: 72

Prediction: Oklahoma 48, Florida Atlantic 20

Southern @ #16 TCU (Noon)

Like Oklahoma, TCU will not have a lot of experience under center (sophomore Shawn Robinson is starting the opener), but will still have a lot of talent all over the field. The Horned Frogs have a dangerous front seven defensively, and, as usual, athletes to get it done on offense. I am not sure where Southern University is. It's such a vague name for a school. I'm assuming it is somewhere in the South (Update: Southern University and A&M College is located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana). Regardless, the Jaguars don't stand a chance against Texas Christian.

Prediction: TCU 55, Southern 3

#23 Texas @ Maryland (Noon, Fox Sports 1)

This is a rematch of last season's opener for each team, when Maryland beat 23rd-ranked Texas 51-41. Maryland will be without head coach DJ Durkin (who is on paid administrative leave), but with or without Durkin, the Terps may have a hard time replicating last year's first-week upset. I'm going with the Longhorns to avenge last season's loss.

Spread: TEX -13.5  Over/Under: 53.5

Prediction: Texas 35, Maryland 21

Furman @ #2 Clemson (12:20 PM, ACC Network)

The Clemson Tigers enter this season looking to get into the College Football Playoff for the fourth straight year. The Tigers return quarterback Kelly Bryant to lead a talented offense, but the defense is ever scarier, returning eight starters, including defensive linemen Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence. The last time Clemson played Furman (an FCS school) was in 2012, and the Tigers beat the Paladins (I have no idea what a Paladin is) 41-7. It won't be that close this time.

Prediction: Clemson 42, Furman 3

Austin Peay @ #3 Georgia (3:30 PM, ESPN)

The run of "warm-up" games against Football Championship Subdivision teams continues as the defending champions runner-ups play the Governors of Austin Peay. Austin Peay is actually a pretty good FCS team (I'm lying, I don't actually know how good this team is), but the Bulldogs have another talented team this year, starting with sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm. Even without Nick Chubb and Sony Michel (both gone to the NFL) at running back, Georgia should roll.

Prediction: Georgia 35, Austin Peay 7

#6 Washington vs. #9 Auburn (3:30 PM, ABC)

Here we go! Our first matchup of the season featuring two ranked teams. This year's installment of the annual "Chick-Fil-A Kickoff" game (which is in Atlanta) features Washington and Auburn. Points may be hard to come by, as both the Huskies and Tigers boast strong defenses. But they also boast strong quarterbacks in Jake Browning and Jarrett Stidham. I think it will come down to which quarterback plays better, and I think the senior (Browning) will out-duel the junior (Stidham).

Spread: AUB -2.5  Over/Under: 48.5

Prediction: Washington 28, Auburn 24

Appalachian State @ #10 Penn State (3:30 PM, BTN)

If you haven't been following Appalachian State football recently (which you really should be), you may not realize the Mountaineers are an FBS team (and have been for a few years). You also may not realize that App State has not beaten a ranked team since the memorable stunner against Michigan in 2009 (though the Mountaineers did take ninth-ranked Tennessee to overtime in the first week of 2016). The Nittany Lions may be without Saquon Barkley, but they still have a lot of playmakers, including senior quarterback Trace McSorely. We won't see a repeat of 2007 on Saturday.

Spread: PSU -24  Over/Under: 54

Prediction: Penn State 45, Appalachian State 10

Tennessee vs. #17 West Virginia (3:30 PM, CBS)

These foes from the SEC and Big 12 (respectively) face off in Charlotte, North Carolina Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers get quarterback Will Grier (34 touchdown passes last season) and wide receiver David Sills V (18 touchdowns last season) back, among others, while the Volunteers are in rebuild mode after a 4-8 finish in 2017. With the uncertainty at quarterback - along with many other positions - for Tennessee (and the certainty at quarterback for WVU), West Virginia shouldn't have much of a problem against the Vols.

Spread: WVU -10  Over/Under: 61.5

Prediction: West Virginia 35, Tennessee 21

UNLV @ #15 USC (4:00 PM, PAC-12 Network)

Out West, two schools with acronym-based names that start with the letter U face off at 4:00. The Trojans lost quarterback Sam Darnold to the NFL, and they are replacing him with true freshman J.T. Daniels (Daniels is just the second true freshman to start at quarterback for USC, the first being Matt Barkley). They also have to replace running back Ronald Jones, who left for the NFL after running for over 1,500 yards last season. USC has a talented team, but there's some youth and inexperience at important positions. Luckily, youth and inexperience shouldn't matter much against a UNLV team that went 5-7 last year.

Spread: USC -26.5  Over/Under: 63.5

Prediction: USC 32, UNLV 10

#22 Boise State @ Troy (6:00 PM, ESPN News)

The Blue Field Broncos start the season away from Boise against a team that beat LSU last season. The Trojans of Troy (who were 11-2 in 2017) cannot be overlooked. They lost their starting quarterback and starting running back from last year, but return key contributors from a defense that finished 11th in points allowed per game. Boise State won last season's meeting between these two 24-13, and I expect a similar result this Saturday.

Spread: BSU -10  Over/Under: 48

Prediction: Boise State 27, Troy 14

#14 Michigan @ #12 Notre Dame (7:30 PM, NBC)

This Saturday's primetime game features a battle between two historic heavyweights. Michigan brings one of the best defenses in the country into South Bend, as well as a new quarterback (Ole Miss transfer Shea Patterson). Notre Dame also has a stout defense. Offensively, Brandon Wimbush returns at quarterback for the Irish, this time without running back Josh Adams (who ran for 1,400 yards in 2017) and offensive linemen Quenton Nelson and Mike McGlinchey (both top-10 draft picks). This may be the tightest matchup on the entire slate, but I'm going to go with the Wolverines and their elite defense (and improved offense) to win a nail-biter at Notre Dame.

Spread: ND -1.5  Over/Under: 46.5

Prediction: Michigan 21, Notre Dame 20

Stephen F. Austin @ #18 Mississippi State (7:30 PM, ESPNU)

The time slot is really the only similarity between this matchup and Michigan-Notre Dame. Mississippi State will be without quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who was suspended one game for violating team rules in March, but the Bulldogs will have true freshman Keytaon Thomas, who led them to a win over Louisville in the TaxSlayer Bowl while Fitzgerald was injured. The Lumberjacks, and FCS team, went 4-7 last season. Easy first week for Mississippi State.

Prediction: Mississippi State 34, Stephen F. Austin 7

Louisville vs. #1 Alabama (8:00 PM, ABC)

The defending champs don't get an FCS cupcake Week 1, but they do get a Louisville squad sans Lamar Jackson. Both Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovailo will probably see time at quarterback for the Tide, and they will have a lot of new (but talented) guys around them. Although the Cardinals don't have the electrifying Jackson (his replacement is sophomore Jawon Pass), they do have several other key starters back. I'm not ruling out Louisville's chances completely, but the Tide should roll in this opener in Orlando.

Spread: ALA -24.5  Over/Under: 62.5

Prediction: Alabama 38, Louisville 21

Bowling Green @ #24 Oregon (8:00 PM, PAC-12 Network)

The most interesting aspect of this matchup will probably be whatever uniforms Oregon decides to wear. The Ducks are on their third head coach in three years, but they do have a talented quarterback (junior Justin Herbert) and an experienced offensive line. And as always, they have speed on the outside. Bowling Green finished 2-10 last season. There won't be much MACtion in Eugene Saturday night.

Spread: ORE -32  Over/Under: 72

Prediction: Oregon 62, Bowling Green 28

Sunday

#8 Miami vs. #25 LSU (7:30 PM, ABC)

We still have one more week before the NFL regular season begins, but we can fill the void this Sunday with a top-10 college football matchup in AT&T Stadium. Fifth-year senior Malik Rosier returns at quarterback for Miami, while junior Joe Burrow, a transfer from Ohio State who beat out sophomore Myles Brennan, will start for LSU. The Tigers had an up-and-down 2017, while the Canes cruised through much of the season (and created the "Turnover Chain") before fading late. Now both are hoping the be Playoff contenders. I'll go with Burrow and the Tigers at home.

Spread: MIA -3.5  Over/Under: 46.5

Prediction: LSU 32, Miami 28

Monday

#20 Virginia Tech @ #19 Florida State (8:00 PM, ESPN)

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! The holiday weekend ends with a top-20 battle between two teams looking to make some noise this season. FSU struggled to a 7-6 record in 2017, then lost head coach Jimbo Fisher to Texas A&M. New coach Willie Taggart will have veteran quarterback Deondre Francois to lean on, if Francois can stay healthy. He'll also have the running back tandem of sophomore Cam Akers (who broke the school record for freshman rushing yards) and senior Jacques Patrick. Frank Beamer's defensive-minded Hokies also have their quarterback (sophomore Josh Jackson) back, and, as always, will be hard to score against. I'm going with Francois and the host Seminoles.

Spread: FSU -7.5  Over/Under: 55

Prediction: Florida State 24, Virginia Tech 14
