Week 2 Review

There were some surprises in Week 2. The Saints lost to the Browns (YES!), the Bills won again and are 2-0, and the Bears handled the 49ers at Levi's Stadium. There were also many big injuries. Robert Griffin III, A.J. Green, Knowshon Moreno, and DeSean Jackson all got hurt on Sunday. Unfortunately, those surprises and injuries hurt some of my picks and predictions. Winner: West (19 carries, 68 yards, TD; 2 catches, 22 yards) and Crowell (11 carries, 54 yards)
Bold Prediction: Terrance West will run for at least 120 yards.
Result: Incorrect. 120 yards was pretty bold. West had a decent day, rushing for 68 yards and a touchdown while also catching two passes for 22 yards.

Result: Incorrect. The Vikings were horrid Sunday. Quarterback Matt Cassel threw four picks and the offense couldn't get anything going. Asiata had 36 yards on the ground and 48 yards through the air (plus a touchdown) and Patterson had 56 receiving yards and 23 return yards.

The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow For The NFL

Before I begin my Week 2 preview, I'd like to take a moment to remember the events of September 11, 2001, 13 years ago this past Thursday. Not to remember all the fire and tragedies, but to remember the heroes and touching stories. As I tweeted on Thursday (@GCTosu), not what someone says, but what someone does, will make him or her be remembered.
As for the NFL, it's been a rough week. Video came out of Ravens running back Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee (they're now married) in an elevator earlier this year, leading to his release and indefinite suspension. Rice had initially been suspended for the first two games after video showed him dragging her out of the elevator. Commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL caught a lot of grief for the lax suspension, so they passed new domestic abuse policies. Now there are reports that Goodell saw the video back in April and lied about not seeing it. This is like the NFL version of Watergate.

Then, when it looks like things couldn't get worse, Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was issued an arrest warrant Friday for causing injury to a child after he disciplined his son with a tree branch. He turned himself in, but will not play against New England this week.
There are many things wrong with Goodell and the NFL, whether it be allowing players to play after getting arrested, being inconsistent with punishments, and not getting priorities straight (smoking pot is worse than abusing someone?). However, all is not bleak in the NFL. There are people within the league who are good-hearted and truthful. For example, Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Devon Still, who's 4-year-old daughter has Stage 4 pediatric cancer, was cut, but then signed to the Bengals practice squad. after Week 1, the Bengals had a open roster spot on their active 53-man roster, so they added Still to the active roster. This feel-good story only gets better. Profit made from the sale of Still jerseys go to help research pediatric cancer and raise awareness. Sales skyrocketed after this was announced. Then, on Wednesday, it was reported that the New Orleans Saints bought 100 jerseys to help the cause. So remember, whatever is going on in the commissioner's office or some places around the NFL, there are still good things going on and many kind, hard-working players and personnel.

New Orleans Saints (0-1) @ Cleveland Browns (0-1)-1:00, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Browns RB Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell vs. Saints Defense
Browns starting running back Ben Tate will be out 2-4 weeks with a sprained knee, so rookies Terrance West, who ran for 100 yards last week after Tate went out, and Isaiah Crowell, who added two touchdowns, will be tasked with the running back duties. They'll be going against a Saints defense that looked more like the porous defense of 2012 than the much-improved defense of 2013, giving up 37 points to the Falcons last week.
Bold Prediction: Terrance West will run for at least 120 yards.
West ran for 100 yards last week, so this is definitely within reach. Plus, the Saints defense is not very strong, and West will most likely get more carries this week than he did last week.
Fantasy Sleeper: Browns RB Terrance West
This is a new section where I choose a player who could be a good play in fantasy football on a particular week, but who may be a bit under the radar (so not Calvin Johnson or Peyton Manning). As I've been saying, West will take advantage of being the starter in the wake of Tate's injury, and he should thrive, especially this week against a weak defense.
Pick: Saints 34, Browns 30
The Browns showed they can stay with good teams by coming back and almost beating Pittsburgh last week, but the Saints are better than the Steelers and looking for their first win. If the Browns defense plays like they did last week against the Saints, they won't be able to keep up.

Miami Dolphins (1-0) @ Buffalo Bills (1-0)-1:00, CBS
Matchup To Watch: Bills Offensive Line vs. Dolphins Defensive Line
Last week against Tom Brady and the Patriots, the Dolphins had four sacks, including two sacks and a forced fumble by defensive end Cameron Wake. Last week in a win over the Bears, the Bills offensive line only allowed one sack.
Bold Prediction: Neither quarterback will throw for over 170 yards.
Last week both of these teams won, yet Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw for only 178 yards, and Bills quarterback E.J. Manuel only threw for 173 yards. Both of these teams rely heavily on the defense and running game.
Fantasy Sleeper: Dolphins Defense
The Miami defense forced two turnovers, had two sacks, and gave up only 249 passing yards to Tom Brady and the Patriots, and E.J. Manuel and the Bills aren't Tom Brady and the Patriots.
Pick: Dolphins 27, Bills 24
This will be a close ground-and-pound game between two decent teams, but the Dolphins quarterback and defense may be the difference.

Jacksonville Jaguars (0-1) @ Washington Redskins (0-1)-1:00, CBS
Matchup To Watch: Jaguars Defense vs. Redskins Defense
This is really about which defense is less bad this week. Jacksonville gave up 420 yards and 34 points to Philadelphia last week, and Washington gave up 321 yards and 17 points to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Texans.
Bold Prediction: Chad Henne will throw for at least 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Henne threw for 266 yards and two touchdowns last week against the Eagles, and the Redskins defense is worse than the Eagles defense.
Fantasy Sleeper: Jaguars WR Allen Hurns
Hurns, an undrafted rookie from Miami, went off in the first half of last week's game, but was quiet in the second half, finishing withfour receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Cecil Shorts III might be out again with a hamstring injury, and rookie Marqise Lee might be out with a hamstring injury he suffered last week. So look for Hurns to have another big game as the Jaguars' best option against a Washington defense that isn't the greatest.
Pick: Jaguars 24, Redskins 21
Neither of these teams are very good, but if the Jaguars do what they did against the Eagles in the first half last week, the Redskins don't have enough firepower to comeback like the Eagles did. It may be an ugly game, but I think the Jaguars come out on top.

Dallas Cowboys (0-1) @ Tennessee Titans (1-0)-1:00, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Cowboys QB Tony Romo vs. Titans Defense
Romo had a horrible game last Sunday, even by Tony Romo standards, throwing three interceptions. But he should do better this week, and he still has some playmakers around him. The Titans defense, however, may present problems. They held the Chiefs to 10 points last week and running back Jamaal Charles to just 19 yards on seven carries.
Bold Prediction: Jake Locker throws for at least 300 yards.
The Cowboys defense is awful, and the Titans offense racked up 405 total yards last week, 266 of them coming from Locker. He's got options in Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter, among others, and again, the Cowboys defense is horrible.
Fantasy Sleeper: Titans Defense
Tony Romo really struggled last week against the 49ers, and while the Titans defense is not quite the 49ers defense, they're still pretty good. The Tennessee defense held Kansas City to 245 total yards and forced three turnovers last week.
Pick: Titans 34, Cowboys 21
The Cowboys do not look good on either side of the ball right now, while the Titans are impressing on both sides. Anything could happen, as the 'Boys have enough talent on the offensive side, but the way things are going, the Titans will take this one.

Arizona Cardinals (1-0) @ New York Giants (0-1)-1:00, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Cardinals RB Andre Ellington vs. Giants RB Rashad Jennings
Both teams have good running backs whom they rely heavily on. Ellington is a playmaker who isn't 100% healthy yet. He had 13 carries for 53 yards last Monday. Jennings had 16 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown. They will be the keys.
Bold Prediction: Carson Palmer will throw for at least 300 yards and three touchdowns.
Palmer led the Cards back in the fourth quarter against the Chargers Monday night, throwing for 304 yards and two touchdowns, and now he faces a Giants defense who got shredded by Matthew Stafford and the Lions. Palmer's got Michael Floyd, who has overtaken Larry Fitzgerald as the number one receiver, among other options against the struggling Giants.
Fantasy Sleeper: Giants TE Larry Donnell
Donnell was the leading receiver for the Giants last Monday night with five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown. He's a good pick-up for those in need of a tight end.
Pick: Cardinals 35, Giants 17
The Cardinals are a more well-rounded team than the Lions, even though the Lions may have more offensive talent. The Giants are bumbling right now, and while I do think it will probably get a little better, it won't this week against the Cards.

New England Patriots (0-1) @ Minnesota Vikings (1-0)-1:00, CBS
Matchup To Watch: Vikings RB Matt Asiata (and WR Cordarrelle Patterson) vs. Patriots Defense
The Patriots got torn up by Dolphins running back Knowshon Moreno, who ran for 134 yards in a win over New England last week. Backup Lamar Miller added 59 yards.  Meanwhile, the Vikings have possibly the most exciting player in the NFL (Cordarrelle Patterson), one who ran for 102 yards on three carries last week, and Asiata, who will take over for Adrian Peterson. The key to a Patriots win will be containing those two.
Bold Prediction: Both Asiata and Patterson will gain over 100 all-purpose yards.
Patterson is almost a cinch to achieve this, whether it be returning kicks, rushing, or receiving. It may be a bit tougher for Asiata, but he's a decent player, and the Patriots run defense is weak.

Pick: Vikings 27, Patriots 23
The Patriots are vulnerable, as shown last week, and they probably won't be as good this year. The Vikings, on the other hand, could be pretty good this year, with Peterson being Peterson, Patterson improving, and Matt Cassel providing solid quarterback play. I think Minnesota will pull out the win at home.

The Falcons offensive line was already ailing before losing rookie left tackle Jake Matthews last week to an ankle injury. On the other hand, the Bengals d-line had three sacks last week, including two (technically 1.5) big sacks by Wallace Gilberry to win the game.
Bold Prediction: Andy Dalton will outthrow Matt Ryan.
Yes, I understand that Matt Ryan set a Falcons franchise record in the overtime win against the Saints last week by throwing for 488 yards. But Dalton, coming off a contract extension, threw for 301 yards last week against a tougher defense. Dalton may have lost tight end Tyler Eifert (put on IR due to an elbow injury), but he still has Giovanni Bernard, A.J. Green, and second tight end Jermaine Gresham, who I will talk about in 3...2...1...
Fantasy Sleeper: Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham
Gresham is a trendy waiver-wire pick-up in fantasy following Eifert's elbow injury, and for good reason. Gresham was the starting tight end in Cincy before they drafted Eifert out of Notre Dame in 2013, and he'll again be at the top of the depth chart. He has some talent and experience, and he has produced before. This is a passing offense, and Gresham will get some more looks.
Pick: Bengals 33, Falcons 27
The Bengals are a very good team, and they're facing another good team that just beat the Saints in overtime. I think the Bengals are the better team, however, as they have more young talent than the Falcons, plus they're at home this week, and it won't be played in a dome.

Detroit Lions (1-0) @ Carolina Panthers (1-0)-1:00, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Lions Offense vs. Panthers Defense
The Panthers front, led by Defensive Player of the Year Luke Keuchly (9 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble), forced three turnovers last week in a win over the Buccaneers, while the Lions offense, led by Matthew Stafford (22-32, 346 yards, 2 TD, 1 rushing TD) and Megatron (7 catches, 164 yards, 2 TD), blew out the Giants last week.
Bold Prediction: Kelvin Benjamin will gain at least 50 yards and score at least one touchdown.
Benjamin, the Panthers receiver and 6'5" red zone target out of Florida State, played well last week, going up to get a touchdown to add to 92 yards, all on six receptions. And that was with Derek Anderson at quarterback. This week, Cam Newton will be back ad it will be exciting what Benjamin, who played well with Newton in the preseason, will perform.

Pick: Panthers 27, Lions 24
This will be an exciting matchup between two young teams with multiple playmakers. The Panthers, though, have Newton back and a much better defense than Detroit, so I have them pulling it out at home.

Saint Louis Rams (0-1) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-1)-4:05, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Buccaneers Offensive Line vs. Rams Defensive Line
The Bucs offensive line showed they're still the weak point of the team last week, giving up three sacks and only rushing for 102 yards. Plus, they're new acquisition, Logan Mankins, is banged up with a knee injury he suffered last week. The Rams defensive line, even without defensive end Chris Long, is dangerous, led by defensive end Robert Quinn, who just received a contract extension Saturday.
Bold Prediction: Austin Davis will throw for at least 200 yards and a touchdown.
This is less my trust in Austin Davis (undrafted rookie quarterback for the Rams who will start for Shan Hill) and more my mistrust in the Buccaneers defense. In fact, They gave up 230 yards and two touchdowns to Derek Anderson last week, so this is achievable.

Pick: Buccaneers 17, Rams 13
This may be an ugly game, but I think the Tampa Bay offense will perform better than in Week 1. They've got size and talent, and Josh McCown isn't that bad.

Seattle Seahawks (1-0) @ San Diego Chargers (0-1)-4:05, FOX
Matchup To Watch: Chargers QB Phillip Rivers and Wide Receivers vs. Seahawks Secondary
Rivers threw for 238 yards and a touchdown last week, but Arizona came back and beat them. Wide receiver Malcolm Floyd had 50 receiving yards and a touchdown. But they're facing the vaunted Seahawks secondary, who bottled up Aaron Rodgers last Thursday in a rout.
Bold Prediction: Phillip Rivers will throw for less than 150 yards.
Like I said, the Seahawks shut down Aaron Rodgers last week, and Phillip Rivers is good, but not quite as good as Aaron Rodgers.
Fantasy Sleeper: Chargers WR Malcolm Floyd
Floyd produced last week with 50 receiving yards and a touchdown, and even against the Seahawks, he could produce a little bit.
Pick: Seahawks 34, Chargers 24
In case you didn't know, the Seahawks are very good. The Chargers are good too, but I'm not sure how long they can hang with Seattle.

Houston Texans (1-0) @ Oakland Raiders (0-1)-4:25, CBS
Matchup To Watch: Raiders QB Derek Carr vs. Texans Defense
Rookie quarterback Derek Carr had a decent debut last week against the Jets, throwing for 151 yards and two touchdowns, although they lost. The Texans defense shut down RGIII and the Redskins, holding them to six points, although they lost first overall pick Jadeveon Clowney to an injury.
Bold Prediction: Ryan Fitzpatrick will throw for at least 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Last time Fitzpatrick played against the Raiders (last year with the Titans), he threw for 320 yards and two touchdowns, and now he has receivers Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins. He played okay last week against Washington, throwing for 206 yards and a touchdown.

Pick: Texans 27, Raiders 14
The Texas are pretty good (although their quarterback situation is still murky), and the Raiders have a rookie quarterback (although he's decent), so my guess is the Texans will win this one on the road with the help of stars Arian Foster and J.J. Watt.

New York Jets (1-0) @ Green Bay Packers (0-1)
Matchup To Watch: Packers RB Eddie Lacy vs. Jets Defensive Line
Lacy, the 2013 Offensive Rookie of the Year, had a rough time on Thursday Night Football against the Seahawks, rushing for 34 yards on 12 carries before exiting with a concussion. However, he moved quickly through concussion protocol, and looks to play this week. He'll be going up against a pretty good Jets front led by Muhammed Wilkerson.
Bold Prediction: Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson will each run for at least 70 yards.
Last week against the Raiders, Ivory had 102 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries, while Johnson had 68 yards on 13 carries, so it's pretty obvious that this is a running back-by-committee. The Packers gave up 207 yards to Marshawn Lynch and the Seahawks last week.
Fantasy Sleeper: Jets TE Jeff Cumberland
Geno Smith doesn't have many receiving options beyond Eric Decker, and Cumberland was second on the team in receiving last week with four catches for 50 yards. So if you're desperate for a tight end in a deep league, he could be a good pick-up.
Pick: Packers 34, Jets 21
The Jets were able to pull out a victory at home against a rookie quarterback last week, but this week they face Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau. Packers get back on track after a rough opening game.

Kansas City Chiefs (0-1) @ Denver Broncos (1-0)-4:25, CBS
Matchup To Watch: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles vs. Broncos RB Montee Ball
Charles is a stud who only got seven carries last week against the Titans (for 19 yards), and Ball is a breakout candidate who got his first start last week against the Colts and rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Both backs will probably produce better this week.
Bold Prediction: Julius Thomas will score at least three touchdowns... again.
Thomas had a huge game last Sunday night, scoring three times on seven receptions for 104 yards. There's no reason he won't be a top target again this week, with Wes Welker still suspended since the new drug policy was not finalized in time for him to be reinstated by Sunday.
Fantasy Sleeper: Chiefs WR Donnie Avery
The Chiefs receiving corps isn't close to that of the Broncos, but they do have to throw sometimes. Last week, Avery was the top receiver with 84 yards on seven receptions. Even though receiver Dwayne Bowe is coming back from a one-game drug suspension this week, Avery will still get targets.
Pick: Broncos 37, Chiefs 17
This one just feels like it'll be a blowout, especially the way these two teams played last week. The Broncos were the usual Broncos in a win over the Colts, while the Chiefs couldn't do much against the Titans.

Chicago Bears (0-1) @ San Francisco 49ers (1-0)-8:30, NBC
Matchup To Watch: Bears WR Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery (and RB Matt Forte) vs. 49ers Secondary
The San Francisco secondary had a field day last Sunday, intercepting Tony Romo three times and returning a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown. They'll have their hands full this week, however, as they go against Forte, one of the best receiving backs in the league and Chicago's leading receiver last week (8 catches, 87 yards), and the one-two receiving punch of Marshall (8 catches, 71 yards, 1 TD) and Jeffery (5 catches, 71 yards). However, both receivers are questionable to play due to injury.
Bold Prediction: Jay Cutler will throw for at least three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Last week in an overtime loss to Buffalo, Cutler threw for two touchdowns and two interceptions, while San Fran picked off Tony Romo three times, but Cutler isn't Romo (well... not exactly), and he has good targets and a good running back.
Fantasy Sleeper: 49ers RB Carlos Hyde
Yes, I understand Hyde is the backup and will only get so many carries, but last week he still had seven carries for 50 yards and a touchdown. Remember, Frank Gore isn't getting any younger (unless he's like Benjamin Button), and Carlos Hyde is at the least a must-have handcuff for Gore.
Pick: Bears 37, 49ers 28
The Bears aren't as bad as they may have shown last week in a loss to the Bills (who actually are not bad), and the 49ers probably aren't as good as they looked last week against the Cowboys (they won't face Bad Tony Romo every week).

 Philadelphia Eagles (1-0) @ Indianapolis Colts (0-1)-8:30, ESPN
Matchup To Watch: Eagles Offensive Line vs. Colts Defense
The Philadelphia offensive line has been depleted by suspension (right tackle Lane Johnson) and injury (right tackle Allen Barbre, who's out with an ankle injury, and left gaurd Evan Mathis, who's questionable with a knee injury), but they may get a break against a punchless Colts front, especially without pass-rusher Robert Mathis (suspension/torn Achilles).
Bold Prediction: Both LeSean McCoy and Darren Sproles will have at least 100 total yards.
Last week we saw how the Eagles will use new toy Darren Sproles, pairing him in the backfield with LeSean McCoy. McCoy had 21 carries for 74 yards and Sproles had 11 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown, and both are dangerous in the passing game.
Fantasy Sleeper: Colts TE Dwayne Allen
Although he splits time with Coby Fleener, he is the lead tight end, and he had four receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown last week. With Andrew Luck at quarterback against a below-average Eagles defense, he's a good play.
Pick: Eagles 34, Colts 31
It may be stupid going against Luck at home after a loss, but the Eagles are exciting, and the Colts are weak on defense and don't have a running game (as long as they keep starting Trent Richardson).

Week 1 Review of Preview

The first week of the 2014 NFL season was an exciting one. this is kind of like a review of the week and a review of my week preview rolled in one. This isn't just so you can see if you should ever listen to me again, it's also for me to see how well I did. We all get to see mistakes I made and parts where I was spot on. This is kind of like a film session. Remember, bold predictions are called bold predictions for a reason. But if they're at least close, then I was sort of right. The point of the bold prediction is to highlight someone/something I feel strong about in the game. A lot of the players I boldly predicted would have amazing games did play very well, but not amazing.

Cleveland Browns @ Pittsburgh Steelers (CBS, 1:00)

Bold Prediction: Ben Tate will run for at least 100 yards.
Result: Incorrect. Tate had 41 yards on six carries before leaving in the second quarter with a sprained knee. His backup Terrance West, however, had 100 yards on 16 carries.

Welcome Back To Football

Hello everyone! What's up!? I hope you all had a great spring and summer, but now it's time to get back to football. This year I will be deploying a slightly different format. For each game, I will have a matchup to watch, a bold prediction (something realistic but maybe not expected or usual), and, of course, my pick. I may add more sections as the season goes along. We'll see. Remember, I am not a prophet (or am I?), so I will get some things wrong and be way off on some picks (like way, way off), but I am educated about football and the NFL (at least I think I am), and I am here to educate others about players and teams this year in the NFL and provide reading material. My material this year may consist of love affairs, colorful words (literally), lots of parenthesis, and silly wordplay. Stay with me.
Now, without further adieu, here is Grantosaurus Rex's Week 1 preview (excluding the Thursday night Packers-Seahawks game):

Cleveland Browns @ Pittsburgh Steelers (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Steelers WR Antonio Brown vs. Browns CB Joe Haden
Both of these players are young Pro Bowlers and key contributors. With number two receiver Emmanuel Sanders gone, Brown may be counted on more in the passing game, although Pittsburgh has electric rookie running back Dri Archer (out of Kent State) and the Steelers may target rookie corner Justin Gilbert on the other side. However, Brown is still the Steelers' best playmaker and they will go after Haden, who allowed 87 yards on nine receptions last time he shadowed Brown.
Bold Prediction: Ben Tate will run for at least 100 yards.
After a fruitless pit of running backs last year, the Browns signed Ben Tate, Arian Foster's former backup in Houston, in the offseason. They also drafted rookie Terrance West (out of Towson), who at one point was projected to take Tate's job by the start of the season. But Tate had a good preseason, while West didn't really produce. Now West isn't even the third down back. Tate's been given all three keys to the running game. He'll also get tons of carries with the Browns' shaky situation at quarterback and Josh Gordon-less receiving corps. Plus, this isn't your father's Steelers defense.
Pick: Steelers 24, Browns 16
As always, I want to think the Browns can win, and they can, but Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has only lost once (he's 17-1) against the Browns in his career. There are many variables with the Browns. Brian Hoyer. Ben Tate. Receivers. Defense. Alas, the smart money is on the Steelers.

New Orleans Saints @ Atlanta Falcons (FOX, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Falcons LT Jake Matthews vs. Saints DE Cam Jordan
The Falcons drafted Matthews (out of Texas A&M) with the 6th overall pick in this year's draft, and he will start right away due to a season-ending injury to Sam Baker. The Falcons ranked last in rushing last year, so they hope Matthews will help improve that against a much-improved Saints defensive front that includes Jordan, who had 12.5 sacks last year.
Bold Prediction: Pierre Thomas will have at least 80 yards rushing and 60 yards receiving.
Saints Running/receiving back Darron Sproles left for Philly in the offseason, so backup Pierre Thomas will take over as the feature back. He produced last year as a versatile running/receiving threat when Sproles was hurt. Mark Ingram (yes, he's still there) and Khiry Robinson are also on the running back depth chart, but they aren't the receiving threats Thomas is. Thomas could have a big season, and it'll start Sunday against a below-average Falcons defense without veteran linebacker Sean Weatherspoon.
Pick: Saints 34, Falcons 24
The Saints are dangerous on offense, as always, and the Falcons don't have a good enough defense to stop all of New Orleans' offensive weapons. It may be a shootout.

Minnesota Vikings @ St. Louis Rams (FOX, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson vs. Rams Defensive Line
A.P., of course, is one of the best, if not the best, running backs in the NFL. But Sunday he'll go up against the formidable trio of Chris Long, Michael Brockers, and Robert Quinn. Their defensive line depth is so good that they cut the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year (Michael Sam, heard of him?).  It will be a battle up front between one of the best running teams and one of the best run-stopping teams.
Bold Prediction: Shaun Hill will throw for over 200 yards.
Yet again, Rams quarterback Sam Bradford is out for the season (torn ACL), and yet again, veteran backup Shaun Hill will take over. Hill was solid last year replacing Bradford, and will probably be solid again this year. He has young weapons like speedster Tavon Austin and tight end Jared Cook, and although they'll run a lot with Zac Stacy, they'll also have to throw some.
Pick: Vikings 24, Rams 17
I love Vikings second-year receiver Cordarrelle Patterson (out of Tennessee), and I think he'll produce some big plays against the ground-and-pound Rams, just enough to put the Vikings on top.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ Philadelphia Eagles (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart vs. Eagles Defense
Uh oh. The Jaguars' leading receiver, Cecil Shorts III, is out this week (hamstring), and they don't really have any other playmakers right now. So the Jags may lean heavily on former A.P. backup Toby Gerhart, who they signed in the offseason. I'm not overly impressed by Gerhart, but he is a big, tough back going up against a below-average defense.
Bold Prediction: The Jaguars will score at least 17 points.
When I say at least 17 points, I basically mean 17 points. I originally put 13 points, but that wouldn't be very bold. The Jaguars scored at least 17 points seven times last year. The Jaguars still aren't scary on offense, but they're improving, with Gerhart at running back and veteran Chad Henne back at quarterback (although rookie Blake Bortles looked better in the preseason). And the Eagles defense isn't great (although it's better, and I'm playing the Eagles' D in fantasy football this week).
Pick: Eagles 35, Jaguars 17
I said in my bold prediction that the Jags will score 17 points, so I have to stick to that. The Eagles have a break-neck offense with a variety of weapons, and the Jaguars aren't there yet.

Oakland Raiders @ New York Jets (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Raiders QB Derek Carr (And His Receivers) vs. Jets Corners
Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr (out of Fresno State) will make his first start on the road against the Jets, but the good news is, he'll be going against a severely stripped-down secondary (at least at corner). Dee Miliner (Jets' 2013 first-round pick) is out with a high ankle sprain, and Dimitri Patterson was cut after he went AWOL during the final preseason game. So the Jets will most likely be starting Darrin Walls and Antonio Allen at cornerback.
Bold Prediction: Derek Carr will throw for at least 200 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Carr beat out veteran Matt Schaub (whose career has gone downhill fast) to start the first game. Carr isn't the best quarterback in the 2014 draft class, but he's decent, and I think he may suprise in his first start, against a depleted Jets secondary.
Pick: Raiders 28, Jets 24
I'm going with the underdogs on the road here, because the Raiders have improved with some (potential) playmakers on offense (MJD, James Jones) and defense (Justin Tuck, LaMarr Woodley) and will be at least a little better this year, while I have worries about the Jets, although quarterback Geno Smith will be better.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Baltimore Ravens (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Ravens RB Bernard Pierce vs. Bengals Defense
In order to win this game, the Ravens are going to need to establish something on the ground. It'll be hard to do that for a team that averaged 3.1 yards per carry last season (last in NFL), that's without Ray Rice (he's suspended the first two games for domestic assault), and that's up against a Bengals defense that was seventh in total defense last season.
Bold Prediction: Gio Bernard will have at least 200 total yards.
The recent release of The Law Firm (Benjarvus Green-Ellis) by the Bengals leaves electrifying second-year running back Giovanni Bernard with more oppurtunities and only rookie Jeremy Hill (LSU) as a threat to take meaningful snaps from him. Bernard is versatile out of the backfield and could be very productive in Week 1.
Pick: Bengals 28, Ravens 17
I'm not impressed by the Ravens. They have hardly any run game (and Ray Rice is out) and they've got some aging players and young, inexperienced players. I do like the Bengals, who have a good defense and young talents on offense (A.J. Green, Gio Bernard).

Buffalo Bills @ Chicago Bears (FOX, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Bears QB Jay Cutler vs. Bills Pass Rush
Jay Cutler is projected by many to have a big season with talented weapons Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery, and his first test will be in Week 1 against a Bills pass rush that set a franchise record with 57 sacks last year.
Bold Prediction: Sammy Watkins will catch 3 passes or less.
Watkins, the wide receiver out of Clemson whom the Bills picked with the fifth overall pick in this year's draft after trading up with Cleveland, is a physical beast who could be very productive, but he's banged up (bruised ribs) and playing with a shaky second-year quarterback (E.J. Manuel).
Pick: Bears 31, Bills 17
The talented Bears offense at home against a young, mostly one-dimensional Bills offense? I'll take Jay Cutler, Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, and the Bears.

Washington Redskins @ Houston Texans (FOX, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Redskins QB Robert Griffin III vs. Texans Pass Rush
RG3 has endured much criticism this preseason after finally removing his knee brace from last season, with some even questioning whether he should start, or new head coach Jay Gruden should start backup Kirk Cousins. The Texans, meanwhile, have some dangerous pass rushers in J. J. Watt (arguably the best defensive player in the league and just got paid), Jedeveon Clowney (first overall pick out of South Carolina), and Brian Cushing (coming back from injury last season), among others.
Bold Prediction: Robert Griffin III will throw at least two interceptions.
As I said above, RG has been shaky this preseason, and the Texans bring pressure. He could prove me wrong and be the RG3 of 2012, but that'd be fine, because this is supposed to be a bold prediction.
Pick: Texans 17, Redskins 13
Yes, the Texan's quarterback situation is unsettled, but they have playmaking receivers (Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins) and a talented, albeit injury-prone, running back (Arian Foster). They'll take this one at home.

Tennessee Titans @ Kansas City Chiefs (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Titans kicker Ryan Succop vs. Chiefs Kicker Cairo Santos
Yes, those are kickers. But there's a little storyline involving Succop. He was released by Kansas City last Saturday, then signed by Tennessee Monday. Now he's playing his former team in Week 1. The reason the Chiefs released Succop is because Santos beat him out for the job. Will Succop have extra motivation to retaliate against his old team? Will Santos have extra motivation to show the Chiefs made the right choice? Will it really matter?
Bold Prediction: Jake Locker will throw for over 300 yards.
"300 yards!? Jake Locker!? Now you're getting bold, Grant." Well, actually, Jake Locker has some talent and some weapons (rookie running back Bishop Sankey {Washington}, number one receiver Kendall Wright, underrated receiver Justin Hunter {or so I've heard}, and running back/receiver Dexter McCluster {another ex-Chief!}), and his new head coach is Ken Wisenhunt, who brought Phillip Rivers back to prominence last season as San Diego's offensive coordinator.
Pick: Titans 31, Chiefs 28
The Titans are playing at Arrowhead Stadium (a tough place to play) against a tough defense, but the Titans are an improved team, and that Chiefs defense has a depleted secondary.

New England Patriots @ Miami Dolphins (CBS, 1:00)
Matchup To Watch: Dolphins Offensive Line vs. Patriots Defensive Line
The Dolphins retooled their offensive line after it gave up a league-leading 58 sacks last year by signing Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert in free agency and drafting right tackle Ju'Waun James (Tennessee) in the first round. The Patriots defensive line, including veteran tackle Vince Wilfork and rookie tackle Dominique Easley (Florida), could challenge the Fins' interior lineman, who are the weak link (especially with starting center Mike Pouncey out a couple of weeks recovering from an injury).
Bold Prediction: Mike Williams will have at least 100 receiving yards.
This is partly due to my belief that Ryan Tannehill, behind a better line (if it is better), could breakout in his third season, or at least be an above-average quarterback. Williams was a disappointment after signing with Miami last year, but he's a speedy deep threat who could torch New England's suspect secondary.
Pick: Patriots 28, Dolphins 27
The Pats should win, because they still have Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, but they could make it close, as they did a few times last year, including Week 1, when they beat the Bills on a last-second field goal.

Carolina Panthers @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4:25, FOX)
Matchup To Watch: Buccaneers Offensive Line vs. Panthers Front Seven
Like the Dolphins, the Bucs added to their offensive line after a poor 2013. They traded tight end Tim Wright to the Patriots for Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins, but their line will be tested against the talented Panther defense, led by tackling machine Luke Kuechly, the 2013 Defensive Player of the Year.
Bold Prediction: Josh McCown will throw at least 3 touchdown passes.
The NBA team they're assembling in the Tampa Bay receiver corps has really grown on me. Veteran receiver Vincent Jackson is 6'5", rookie receiver Mike Evans (Texas A&M) is 6'5", and rookie tight end Austin Sefarian-Jenkins (Washington) is 6'5". With size like that, quarterback Josh McCown can throw for three touchdowns if his line gives him time.
Pick: Buccaneers 31, Panthers 17
I had the Panthers winning, but hearing Panthers quarterback Cam Newton may not play (due to a hairline fracture in his ribs) scared me, and if Cam's not playing, the easy choice is the talented and underrated Bucs.

San Francisco 49ers @ Dallas Cowboys (4:25, FOX)
Matchup To Watch: 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick vs. Cowboys QB Tony Romo
This game is most likely going to be a shootout, as Dallas' defense is like Swiss cheese and the Niners are without linebacker Aldon Smith (nine game suspension due to substance abuse and linebacker Navarro Bowman (recovering from a torn ACL). So this will be up to which of these gunslingers plays best.
Bold Prediction: A kicker will miss a field goal.
I don't know what to say. I'm not going to get really crazy and say something like the Cowboys defense will do well or it won't be a barn-burner. So I'll just say either Niners kicker Phil Dawson or Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey will miss a makeable field goal, possibly a big one.
Pick: 49ers 41, Cowboys 38
The Cowboys always seem to be in close shootouts with good teams that normaly seem to go the other team's way. It may not be this high-scoring, but there will be plenty of offense.

Indianapolis Colts @ Denver Broncos (8:30, NBC)
Matchup To Watch: Colts Quarterback Andrew Luck vs. Broncos QB Peyton Manning
Easy one, duh. Two of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League, in the Mile High City, in primetime. Peyton vs. his predecessor (actually, the year before Peyton left and Andrew Luck was picked first overall, Manning missed the entire season, so technically, Kerry Collins was Manning's predecessor).
Bold Prediction: Andrew Luck will throw for more yards than Peyton Manning. 
I have the Broncos winning this game, but that doesn't mean Luck won't out-throw Manning. What will be the difference is the running game. Broncos second-year back Montee Ball has a much better chance of being a breakout than Colts starter Trent Richardson, and honestly, I think Ball is much better than Richardson. Trent Richardson is not good.
Pick: Broncos 35, Colts 27
This, like 49ers-Cowboys, will most likely be a shootout. Aside from the running backs, Denver's defense could be a deciding factor as well, as the Broncos' defense is far superior to the Colts'.

New York Giants @ Detroit Lions (7:10 Mon, ESPN)
Matchup To Watch: Giants Offensive Line vs. Lions Defensive Line
The Giants' offensive line has been a weakness, and the one free agent they signed to help the line, guard Geoff Schwartz, is out seven weeks with a dislocated toe. As for the Lions' defensive line, well, there's Ndamukong Suh, along with Nick Fairley and Ziggy Ansah. Those three are going to be hard for the Giants to stop.
Bold Prediction: Eli Manning throws zero interceptions.
Giants quarterback Eli Manning led the NFL in interceptions last year with 27, but he has a new offensive coordinator (Ben McAdoo), and although he went through growing pains in the preseason learning the new offense, it should pay off in the end, and he can't be as bad as he was last year. Right?
Pick: Lions 34, Giants 28
This will be a closely-contested game, but Detroit has more offensive fire power (Calvin Johnson, Reggie Bush/Joique Bell, Matthew Stafford). They could blow this game, though, as they have done before, but I think they come out on top.

San Diego Chargers @ Arizona Cardinals (10:20 Mon, ESPN)
Matchup To Watch: Chargers WR Keenan Allen vs. Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson
Allen had a big rookie season last year with 1,046 yards receiving and eight touchdowns, but he'll be going up against one of the best cornerbacks and playmakers in the league (or in his own opinion, the best), who also just got a huge payday.
Bold Prediction: Michael Floyd leads all receivers in yards and touchdowns.
This isn't that out of the box, as Allen will be covered by Peterson and Floyd is surpassing Larry Fitzgerald as the Cardinals' number one receiver. He's primed for a breakout season with underrated (seriously) quarterback Carson Palmer.
Pick: Chargers 27, Cardinals 21
I might have picked the Cards if running back Andre Ellington wasn't questionable to play. The Chargers have a great quarterback in Phillip Rivers and I think they take this one.

Analysis: Donaldson, Cespedes's teammate, has a nice home run total this year and is excited to be participating. He's a dark horse candidate.

Derby Appearances: 0

Analysis: Dozier is probably an underdog, being a middle infielder who didn't show much power before recently. But he does have familiarity with Target Field and the support of the home crowd.

Stats: 16 HR, .486 SLG, .186 ISO

Derby Appearances: 0

Analysis: Jones will be entertaining and a power threat, although he plays in the homer-friendly Camden Yards and has one of the lesser home run totals among the participants.

Derby Appearances: 0

Analysis: Puig will provide lots of entertainment and showmanship, but he only has 12 home runs. Then again, he may thrive in this environment.

Stats: 21 HR, .538 SLG, .241 ISO

Derby Appearances: 0

Analysis: Stanton is the clear-cut favorite, as he smashes moon shots regularly, and he has the largest average home run distance in the league. He's the guy to beat.

Stats: 21 HR, .613 SLG, .268 ISO

Derby Appearances: 0

Analysis: Tulo, the NL captain, has impressive numbers and is by far the best shortstop in Major League Baseball, but he, like Morneau, plays in the Mile High City, and his Home-Road splits (Home: .419/.497/.748; Away: .265/.367/.463) show the effects of Coors Field.

Prediction: Round 1

These predictions are basically stabs in the dark, as anyone of these competitors could take home the trophy.  I used ESPN.com and FanGraphs as statistical references.

Evaluation of the A's-Cubs Trade (Plus the D-Backs-Angels Trade)

Last night the Chicago Cubs traded pitchers Jeff Samardzijia and Jason Hammel to the Oakland A's for shortstop Addison Russell (the A's top prospect and 2012 first-round pick), pitcher Dan Straily (second-year starter for the A's who was demoted to AAA), outfielder Billy McKinley (the A's #2 prospect and 2013 first-round draft pick), and the good old PTBNL (Player To Be Named Later). Obviously it's hard to gauge a trade right after it happens, especially when there are prospects involved. It's a waiting game. But as it stands right now, it looks like a win-win. Billy Beane and the A's bolster their rotation, making then a World Series favorite (they already have the best record in Major League Baseball) and Theo Epstein and the Cubs get another top prospect to add to their glut of future stars, including third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Javier Baez. One might question the Cubs stockpiling young shortstops, with Starlin Castro already entrenched there at the big league level, but they will probably move one of the shortstops to second base and trade another (probably Baez) for young pitching. As for the A's, their rotation goes from Sonny Gray-Scott Kazmir-Tommy Milone-Brad Mills-Jesse Chavez to Jeff Samardzijia-Jason Hammel-Sonny Gray-Scott Kazmir-Jesse Chavez (or something like that). That's an upgrade.

In other (more minor) news, the Arizona Diamandbacks traded reliever Joe Thatcher and outfielder Tony Campana to the L.A. Angels for two prospects, outfielder Zack Borenstein and pitcher Joey Krehbeil. This trade is a small response to the A's trade as the Angels bolster their bullpen to try to keep up with the A's in the AL West. The D-Backs, like the Cubs, get pieces for the future, as they are out of contention this year.o)

Billy Beane and the A's bolster their rotation, making then a World Series favorite (they already have the best record in Major League Baseball) and Theo Epstein and the Cubs get another top prospect to add to their glut of future stars, including third baseman Kris Bryant and shortstop Javier Baez. One might question the Cubs stockpiling young shortstops, with Starlin Castro already entrenched there at the big league level, but they will probably move one of the shortstops to second base and trade another (probably Baez) for young pitching. As for the A's, their rotation goes from Sonny Gray-Scott Kazmir-Tommy Milone-Brad Mills-Jesse Chavez to Jeff Samardzijia-Jason Hammel-Sonny Gray-Scott Kazmir-Jesse Chavez (or something like that). That's an upgrade.

In other (more minor) news, the Arizona Diamandbacks traded reliever Joe Thatcher and outfielder Tony Campana to the L.A. Angels for two prospects, outfielder Zack Borenstein and pitcher Joey Krehbeil. This trade is a small response to the A's trade as the Angels bolster their bullpen to try to keep up with the A's in the AL West. The D-Backs, like the Cubs, get pieces for the future, as they are out of contention this year.

If you aren't familiar with the All-Star voting rules, here they are: 34 players from each league are selected via fan voting, player voting, coaches selection, and a final fan vote. At least one player from each team must be in the game. This is a mix of who I think WILL be in the All-Star Game and who I think SHOULD be in the All-Star Game (Example: Derek Jeter isn't playing very well this season, but because he's a future Hall-of-Famer in his last season, he will get voted in as a starter). There are a few players I had  a somewhat tough time omitting. I was especially torn on pitchers (apologies to relievers who aren't closers, such as Jonathan Broxton, Dellin Betances, and Jake McGee). I used various stats and references to make these selections. Feel free to disagree. 

Week 13 NFL Picks

It'll be another short post this week due to wrestling, but I will give all of my picks. I was 5-7-1 last week, with the Packers and Vikings tying. My overall record is now 66-48-1. 

Browns (4-7) over Jaguars (2-9) (Jacksonville at Cleveland, 1:00, CBS)

I no longer believe in the Browns (especially with Beandon Weeden under center), but I do believe they can beat the Jaguars at home. (Side Note: Watch out for Browns backup Alex Tanney, who is better known for a YouTube video of trick shots than actual football)

Titans (5-6) over Colts (7-4) (Tennessee at Indianapolis, 1:00, CBS)

This one was tough, and I think it could go either way. But the Colts have not looked good at all recently and the Titans will be looking for redemption.

Bears (6-5) over Vikings (2-8-1) (Chicago at Minnesota, 1:00, FOX)

I actually think this might be close, but Josh McCown has continued playing solidly, and the Bears are much better than Minnesota.

Dolphins (5-6) over Jets (5-6) (Miami at New York, 1:00, CBS)

The Jets have lost two in a row, while the Dolphins played hard against the Panthers last week, only losing by four. I'm guessing Miami in a low-scoring game.

Cardinals (7-4) over Eagles (6-5) (Arizona at Philadelphia, 1:00, FOX)

I know I like The Eagles and their offense, but I'm liking the Cards right now. They're on a five-game winning streak and have a great defense, as well as solid quarterback and running back play.

Panthers (8-3) over Buccaneers (3-8) (Tampa Bay at Carolina, 1:00, FOX)

This one doesn't need much explanation. The Panthers, on a seven-game win streak and led by Riverboat Ron and SuperCam, should thrash the Bucs.

Patriots (8-3) over Texans (2-9) (New England at Houston, 1:00, CBS)

Another one that doesn't need much explanation. The Texans are a wreck, and the Patriots are coming off a huge win over Denver. Another expected thrashing.

Bills (4-7) over Falcons (2-9) (Atlanta at Buffalo, 4:05, FOX)

The Falcons are also a wreck (though maybe not quite as much as Houston), and the Bills, led by E.J. Manuel, who is getting back to form following an injury, are coming off a win against the Jets.

Rams (5-6) over 49ers (7-4) (St. Louis at San Francisco, 4:05, FOX)

UPSET ALERT! I don't care that the Niners are coming off a big win and playing at home. I like the Rams, and  stud running back Zac Stacy (whose on my fantasy team) is healthy after getting hurt last week.

Broncos (9-2) over Chiefs (9-2) (Denver at Kansas City, 4:25, CBS)

I thought about picking the Chiefs to redeem themselves at Arrowhead, but they're on a two-game losing streak and Denver is a better team who should've beaten New England last week.

Chargers (5-6) over Bengals (7-4) (Cincinnati at San Diego, 4:25, CBS)

The Chargers are coming off a big win against the Chiefs, and Phillip Rivers is having a career year. The Bengals have been inconsistent, and I think they'll be beaten in a shootout by Rivers and the Bolts.

Giants (4-7) over Redskins (3-8) (New York at Washington, 8:25, NBC)

Washington is awful this year. The Giants haven't been great, but they've played much better, led by running back Andre Brown (another guy on my fantasy team). The Giants should cruise in my opinion.

Saints (9-2) over Seahawks (10-1) (New Orleans at Seattle, 8:30, ESPN)

This will be a very good game. Seattle's power running game and elite defense vs. New Orleans's potent passing attack and underrated defense. I think Drew Brees and the Saints win this battle.
