NFL Week 8 Analysis

Panthers (4-3) 31 Buccaneers (0-7) 13

MVP: Panthers QB Cam Newton-"Superman" was at his best Thursday night, tearing apart the Buccaneers for 221 yards on 23-32 passing with two touchdowns, along with 11 carries for 50 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Other Candidates: Panther WR Ted Ginn Jr. (5 catches, 80 yards)

Unsung Hero: Panthers D-The very good Panthers defense, led by linebacker Luke Kuechly, held Tampa Bay to 13 points while registering three sacks and seven tackles for a loss.

Story of the Game: A Streak and a Skid Continue-The Panthers have won three straight to climb above .500. Cam Newton has thrown for 667 yards, six touchdowns, and no picks during that time. The Bucs, meanwhile, continue to struggle, falling to 0-7. It doesn't look like Greg Schiano will be the coach much longer.

Browns (3-5) 17 Chiefs (8-0) 23

MVP: Chiefs QB Alex Smith-Smith was able to lead the Chiefs to another victory with his mistake-free approach. He was 24-36 with 225 yards and two touchdowns. 

Other Candidates: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (18 carries, 74 yards), Browns WR Josh Gordon (5 catches, 132 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: Chiefs K Ryan Succop-Field goals won this game. Ryan Succop was 3-4 on field goals of 42, 35, and 40, one of them putting Kansas City up six with seconds to play.

Story of the Game: Chiefs March On-The Chiefs escaped again, preserving their perfect record and their place atop the NFL. A stout defense, solid quarterback, and stud running back have helped establish them as the league's best team.

Cowboys (4-4) 30 Lions (5-3) 31

MVP: Lions WR Calvin Johnson-Megatron had a HUGE day Sunday, helping the Lioms win a hotly-contested game with a catch in the closing seconds to set up Matthew Stafford's leap over the goal line for the deciding touchdown. He came within seven yards of the NFL record for receiving yards in a game, finishing with 14 catches for 329 yards and a touchdown.

Other Candidates: Lions QB Matthew Stafford (33-48, 488, TD, 2 INT), Lions RB Reggie Bush (21 carries, 92 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: Lions QB Matthew Stafford-You may not think of a quarterback who threw for 488 yards and rallied his team to win in the final seconds as an "unsung hero", but it was the way he did it that got him in this spot. After Johnson caught a pass on the one yard-line with 12 seconds left, Stafford signaled to the offense to hustle to the line so he could spike the ball. But instead of spiking it, he faked everyone out, including Calvin Johnson and most of his team, by lunging over everybody and putting the ball over the goal line for a game-winning touchdown.

Story of the Game: Battle of Top WRs-During the week leading up to this game, Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant said something to the effect of thinking he was the best receiver in the NFL, even better than Calvin Johnson. Dez, you're not the best receiver in te NFL, as Megatron showed Sunday. Dez did catch three passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns, but he was also seen getting in the faces of Tony Romo and Jason Witten and complaining after the Lions' game-winner.

Dolphins (3-4) 17 Patriots (6-2) 27

MVP: Patriots D-In a slow game offensively, the Pats defense came up big, allowing 17 total points while getting six sacks, eight tackles for a loss, and two picks. They picked up a struggling offense and helped New England come out victorious.

Other Candidates: Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (4 catches, 60 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: Patriots RB Stevan Ridley-With Tom Brady struggling and the passing game sputtering, Ridley picked up the slack, carrying the ball 14 times for 79 yards and a touchdown. 

Story of the Game: TomTerrific?-The  Patriots won, but yet again, it wasn't pretty. Tom Brady struggled again, going 13-22 for 116 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Bills (3-5) 17 Saints (6-1) 35

MVP: Saints QB Drew Brees-Brees was at it again, lighting up the Bills for five touchdowns on 26-34 passing and 332 yards. Plus, my new name for my fantasy football team is "Warm Summer Brees".

Other Candidates: Saints WR Kenny Stills (3 catches, 129 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Saints D-The Saints offense was the bigger story, but the Saints defense played solidly, giving up 17 points while racking up four sacks, eight tackles for a loss, and a pick.

Story of the Game: Brees Continues to Bomb it-Drew Brees threw five touchdown passes Sunday, extending his NFL record of games with five or more touchdown passes to eight. He continues to tear up opposing defenses and lead the lethal Saints.

Giants (2-6) 15 Eagles (3-5) 7

MVP: Giants K Josh Brown-Brown won a offensive-challenged game for the Giants, kicking a career-high five field goals. He literally scored all of the Giants' points with field goals of 40, 44, 33, 46, and 27 yards.

Other Candidates: Giants QB Eli Manning (25-39, 246 yards)

Unsung Hero: Giants D-The Giants defense held a high-flying Eagles offense that was electric through the first six games to 200 total yards and zero points (Philly got a touchdown on a fumble recovery). They also had four sacks, six tackles for a loss, and two interceptions. The Giants defense has not allowed a touchdown the last ten quarters.

Story of the Game: Eagles Shot Down-The past two games, the Eagles have scored a grand-total of ten points and zero touchdowns in losses to the Cowboys and Giants. After lighting up opposing defenses the first six games, the offense has gone dormant. Chip Kelly said it's due to unstable quarterback play, and he couldn't be more right. The combination of Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Matt Barkley has been ineffective.

49ers (6-2) 42 Jaguars (0-8) 10

MVP: 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick-To be honest, just about anybody in the NFL can be an MVP against the Jaguars, but it was Kaepernick who tore then up Sunday. He was 10-16 throwing for 164 yards and a touchdown, and added 7 carries for 54 yards and two rushing touchdowns.

Other Candidates: 49ers RB Frank Gore (19 carries, 74 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: 49ers QB Colt McCoy-McCoy was not a hero in any kind of way, but when you play the Jaguars, you don't need a hero. However, Colt did get playing time late and was 1-1 for 13 yards. Good job, Colt!

Story of the Game: Losers in London-The two games played in London so far this year have been pretty lackluster. The first game was between the then-winless Steelers and then-winless Vikings (a game won by the Vikings, who haven't won another), and then the second one was a drubbing of the winless Jaguars by the 49ers. Sorry London.

Jets (4-4) 9 Bengals (6-2) 49

MVP: Bengals WR Marvin Jones-I could've gone with Andy Dalton, who threw five touchdown passes, but Marvin Jones had four touchdown receptions. He and Dalton were basically playing catch against the Jets Sunday. Jones also had 122 yards on eight catches.

Other Candidates: Bengals QB Andy Dalton (19-30, 325 yards, 5 TD, INT)

Unsung Hero: Bengals D-The Bengals defense, like the offense, had a field day against the Jets Sunday. Holding them to just three field goals while also registering four sacks, six tackles for a loss, and two pick-sixes.

Story of the Game: Lions Pounce on Jets-that was an absolute demolition of the Jets by Andy Dalton, Marvin Jones, and the Bengals. Te Bengals are a very impressive team, especially after that thrashing.

Steelers (2-5) 18 Raiders (4-3) 21

MVP: Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor-Pryor got going right out of the gate Sunday, scoring on a 93-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, an NFL record for longest run by a quarterback. He finished the day with 106 yards rushing for a touchdown, while also throwing in 88 yards passing.

Other Candidates: Raiders RB Darren McFadden (24 carries, 73 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Raiders D-After the record-breaking score to start the game, the offense settled down. Thanks to the defense, though, they held on. Oakland's D had five sacks, ten tackles for a loss, an two picks.

Story of the Game: End of the Bye Week Blues-Coming into this game, the Raiders had lost nine straight games coming off bye weeks. They ended that Sunday, getting their first win coming out of a bye since 2002.

Redskins (2-5) 21 Broncos (7-1) 45

MVP: Broncos QB Peyton Manning-Manning made more mistakes than usual in this game, throwing three picks, but he still played Peyton Manning-like, throwing for 354 yards on 30-44 passing with four touchdowns.

Other Candidates: Broncos WR Demaryus Thomas (7 catches, 75 yards, TD), Broncos WR Wes Welker (6 catches, 81 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno-Moreno continued his impressive season Sunday by producing out of the backfield and in the passing game. He had 13 rushes for 43 yards, plus six receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown.

Story of the Game: Another Week, Another Homecoming-A week after Peyton Manning's return, Washington head coach Mike Shannahan made his first appearance in Denver since he was fired as the Broncos' head coach in 2008. He won two Super Bowls and was 87-31 in Denver.

Falcons (2-5) 13 Cardinals (4-4) 27

MVP: Cardinals RB Andre Ellington-Ellington, a rookie sixth-round pick out of Clemson, started in place of the injured Rashard Mendenhall and played much better than Mendenhall has all season, rushing for 154 yards on 15 carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run.

Other Candidates: Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (13-18, 172 yards, 2 TD, INT), Falcons WR Harry Douglas (12 catches, 121 yards)

Unsung Hero: Cardinals D-Man, I have a lot of defenses as "Unsung Heros" , don't I? Well, the Cards D gave Matt Ryan fits, sacking him four times and picking him off four times.

Story of the Game: Electric Ellington-Ellington impressed Sunday, and I reaped the benefits, having picked him up an putting him in my starting fantasy football lineup a couple of days before. Even when Mendenhall comes back, Ellington should remain the starter.

Packers (5-2) 44 Vikings (1-6) 31

MVP: Packers QB Aaron Rodgers-Aaron Rodgers was Aaron Rodgers Sunday night, completing a very accurate 24-29 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns. He paced the Pack to another victory. 

Other Candidates: Packers WR Jordy Nelson (7 catches, 123 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Packers RB Eddie Lacy-Lacy continued his solid rookie season and helped balance the Packers offense once again, rushing 29 times for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Story of the Game: Cordarrelle Patterson!!!-Patterson, a rookie receiver and kick returner out of Tennessee whom I really liked heading into the season, opened the game with a 109-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. He also two receptions for 26 yards in a losing effort.

Seahawks (7-1) 14 Rams (3-5) 9

MVP: Seahawks D-This game was a struggle offensively, and it came down to a goal-line stand by the Seahawks defense to win the game. They also had three sacks and two picks against Rams backup Kellen Clemens.

Other Candidates: Seahawks WR Golden Tate (5 catches, 93 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Rams D-It was such a struggle offensively, the Rams defense got "Unsung Hero". They held Seattle to two touchdowns and racked up seven sacks in a near-upset.

Story of the Game: Receiver Rice Done-The Seahawks lost wide receiver Sidney Rice for the season Monday night with a torn ACL. In related news, receiver Percy Harvin did not return Monday night because he suffered a minor setback in his rehab last week.

Week 8 NFL Picks

Last week was a little rough for me. I went 6-7, predicting many things wrong, including the Rams upsetting the 49ers, Browns receiver Tori Gurley making an impact (he was waived again this week), and Eli Manning throwing more interceptions. I was right, though, on Texans QB Case Keenum playing solid, and my record isn't as bad as I thought. Let's hope this week is better. My overall record is now 32-24. Now, pick time:
Chiefs (7-0) over Browns (3-4) (Cleveland at Kansas City, 1:00, CBS)
Come on down, Jason Campbell! Campbell will be the Cleveland Browns' 20th starting quarterback since 1999. I heard on ESPN the other day that St. Ignatius, a local high school in Cleveland, has had 16 quarterbacks during that span. That's pretty depressing. For his first start since 2011, Campbell gets to face the only remaining unbeaten team and the best defense in the NFL. He gets to do it on the road, too. Along with the league's best defense, the Chiefs have running back Jamaal Charles, who's third in the NFL in rushing yards and second in touchdowns. All that, plus a pretty easy schedule-Kansas City's opponents so far are a combined 15-33-have attributed to the unbeaten record. I think Campbell will be better than Brandon Weeden (which isn't hard to do), but the Chiefs should cruise to 8-0.

Lions (4-3) over Cowboys (4-3) (Dallas at Detroit, 1:00, FOX)
This will be an enticing matchup between two prolific passing teams; both have gun-slinging quarterbacks (Matthew Stafford and Tony Romo) and two of the top wide receivers in the NFL (Calvin Johnson and Dez Bryant). Both teams also have banged-up running backs who expect to play this week. It looks like DeMarco Murray will make his return for the Cowboys after missing the last game with a sprained knee ligament. Reggie Bush's status is a bit more foggy due to an injury he sustained in practice, but he should also play. This will be a close, high-scoring game. I think it will come down to the wire, and we all know how clutch Tony Romo is. I'm going with Megatron and the Lions at home.

Patriots (5-2) over Dolphins (3-3) (Miami at New England, 1:00, CBS)
Both of these teams are coming off heart-breaking losses in the final seconds. The Dolphins have lost three in a row, thanks in large part to the weak offensive line, which has given up a league-high 26 sacks, and the nonexistent running game, which is 29th in the NFL with 468 rushing yards. The Patriots offense, surprisingly, hasn't fared much better. Tom Brady has uncharacteristically struggled, only throwing one touchdown pass the last three games. Rob Gronkowski returned last week and caught eight balls for 114 yards, starting right where he left off last season. Gronk will be key in getting the New England offense going, especially while their defense is hobbled by injuries. This may be another game won in the final seconds, and I think the Pats give the Fins a fourth straight loss.

Saints (5-1) over Bills (3-4) (Buffalo at New Orleans, 1:00, CBS)
Quarterback Thad Lewis has done a fine job taking over for E.J. Manuel, leading the Bills to a nail-biting win over the Dolphins last week. He also has some help in running back Fred Jackson, a workhorse back who is tied for fifth in the NFL in touchdowns and has shaken off injuries and produced in C.J. Spiller's injury-induced absence, as well as a defense led by defensive end Mario Williams, who is second in the NFL in sacks. Drew Brees and the Saints, however, are a dangerous team, even after suffering their first loss in heart-breaking fashion to the Patriots two weeks ago before their bye week last week. Brees is fifth in the NFL in passing yards and touchdowns, and hopes to have his tight end Jimmy Graham, who is questionable with an ankle injury. The Saints, Graham or no Graham, should comfortably beat the Bills.

Eagles (3-4) over Giants (1-6) (New York at Philadelphia, 1:00, FOX)
I still believe in the Eagles and their fast-paced offense, even though they let me down last week with a 17-3 loss to the Cowboys. I also still believe the Giants are an awful team, despite them getting their first win of the season last Monday against the Vikings. Why do I still believe these things? For the Eagles, it's because Michael Vick is back this week, and LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson are studs and now both on my fantasy team (plus both of their names end with "Sean"). For the Giants, it's because they beat the 1-5 Vikings, led by Josh Freeman, who couldn't hit Yao Ming on stilts Monday night, And because Peyton Hillis is starting at running back. I have the Eagles in a rout.

49ers (5-2) over Jaguars (0-7) (San Francisco at Jacksonville, 1:00, FOX)
Good news and bad news for the Jaguars. Good news: They might not be the worst team in the NFL, as the scuffling Buccaneers are also 0-7. Bad news: They are still very bad, probably won't win any games, and are, in my opinion, at least talent-wise, still the worst team in the NFL. I will say that they have two pretty good receivers in Cecil Shorts III and Justin Blackmon, but receivers need decent quarterbacks to throw to them. The 49ers, on the other hand, are the 49ers, with their devastating defense, workhorse back Frank Gore, and the talented Colin Kaepernick. 49ers in a drubbing.

Bengals (5-2) over Jets (4-3) (New York at Cincinnati, 4:05, CBS)
Both of these teams won on game-winning field goals last week, and both teams are building up heads of steam. Andy Dalton and the Bengals have won three in a row and have a comfortable lead atop the AFC North, while Geno Smith and the Jets beat the division-leading Patriots last week. the Bengals, though, have more weapons in the passing game, with A.J. Green, Tyler Eifert, and Gio Bernard, among others. I'm going with Cincy in what could be another close one.

Raiders (2-4) over Steelers (2-4) (Pittsburgh at Oakland, 4:05, CBS)
I haven't been thoroughly impressed with either of these teams thus far, although maybe that's just because I haven't really seen either of these teams. The Steelers are riding a two game win streak after starting 0-4, helped by an improving defense and rookie running back Le'Veon Bell, who ran for 93 yards last week. The Raiders are coming off a bye week after a rough loss against Kansas City, and the scrambling Terrelle Pryor and injury-prone but talented Darren McFadden will look to get back on track. I don't exactly know why, but I'm going against the Steelers again. I have Oakland in an ugly one.

Falcons (2-4) over Cardinals (3-4) (Atlanta at Arizona, 4:25, FOX)
Both of these bird-themed teams have had their struggles this year. I feel sorry for Larry Fitzgerald, as he's having yet another year of limited production due to subpar quarterback play. They also don't have a rushing game yet again, as they're tied for 26th in yards per carry. Their defense, led by athletic DBs Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu, is what's keeping them afloat. The Falcons haven't had much of a rushing attack, either, but Steven Jackson, who's been out since week two, is slated to start. However, they still won't have Roddy White, so Harry Douglas will need another big game after putting up 149 receiving yards last week. I wouldn't bet against it, as I think the Falcons will fly by the Cards.

Broncos (6-1) over Redskins (2-4) (Washington at Denver, 4:25, FOX)
Another must-see game, just like Dallas-Detroit. Peyton Manning and the Broncos are trying to rebound after a loss to the Colts in Peyton's return to Indy, and the Denver, after giving up 39 points in Indy, might have found some weaknesses. The Redskins, meanwhile, are coming off another big win and another impressive RGIII performance. Griffin appears to be getting back to pre-injury form, throwing for 298 yards and two touchdowns, as well as 84 yards on the ground, in last week's 45-41 win vs. the Bears. At the end of the day, I think this will be a shootout won by Dever's prolific offense at Mile High.

Packers (4-2) over Vikings (1-5) (Green Bay at Minnesota, 8:30, NBC)
It's been ugly for the Vikings, who are 1-5 after falling to the winless Giants Monday night. Christian Ponder will get the start Sunday night because Josh Freeman has a concussion, and I'm not sure Ponder can do much worse than Freeman did Monday night. If Minnisota wants to have a sniff of a chance at winning, they need to get Adrian Peterson going again. AP only had 28 yards last week on 13 carries. The Packers have been hobbled by injuries to receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones, but Jarrett Boykin has stepped in and produced, posting 103 receiving yards last week. I think the Pack will be fine as long as Aaron Rodgers is throwing the ball, no matter who he's throwing to. Plus, they finally have a running game with rookie running back Eddie Lacy. I say Green Bay in a rout.

Seahawks (6-1) over Rams (3-4) (Seattle at St. Louis, 8:30 Mon. ESPN)
I probably only need one sentence to explain this pick. Here it is: The Rams called Brett Favre last week. That's how desperate they are for a quarterback to replace the injured Sam Bradford, who's out for the season. The Seahawks aren't desperate for anyone, and in fact are waiting another week to bring back wide receiver Percy Harvin, who practiced this week for the first time this season, from the IR. It looks like Kellen Clemens will get the start for St. Louis this week, so Seattle will probably kill the Rams.

Week 7 NFL Picks

I apologize for not doing a week 6 analysis last week. Now I've missed a week of picks and a week of analysis. I've been pretty busy and I've been distracted by Pokèmon. But I promise I won't miss another post. I went 8-6 in my picks last week, bringing my overall record to 26-17. Here are this week's picks:

Falcons (1-4) over Buccaneers (0-5) (Tampa Bay at Atlanta, 1:00, FOX)

Both of these teams have struggled mightily so far and had to deal with key injuries. For the Bucs, Vincent Jackson has turned it on, finishing with nine catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow receiver Mike Williams is questionable this week after sitting out last week with a sore hamstring. Tampa also has guard Carl Nicks and kicker Lawrence Tynes out with MRSA. As for the Falcons, they lost receiver Julio Jones for the season, and running back Steven Jackson is still out. I think Matt Ryan and the Falcons will win an ugly one.

Lions (4-2) over Bengals (4-2) (Cincinnati at Detroit, 1:00, CBS)

Again, like last week's Lions-Browns game, I think a key factor is Calvin Jonhson's health. Megatron will probably play more this week, and the emergence of tight end Joseph Fauria last week could help Johnson. The Bengals barely escaped in overtime last week, allowing the Bills to come back and almost beat them. I don't think they escape this week in Detroit.

Bills (2-4) over Dolphins (3-2) (Buffalo at Miami, 1:00, CBS)

After starting 3-0, the Dolphins have struggled, especially the offensive line and running game. The Bills, led by quarterback Thad Lewis, whom they signed off the practice squad last week after E.J. Manuel got injured, almost knocked off the Bengals last week. Lewis looked impressive, as did their pass rush, which is third in the NFL in sacks. That pass rush might give Miami's struggling o-line fits. I think it will, and I believe Lewis gets his first career win.

Patriots (5-1) over Jets (3-3) (New England at New York, 1:00, CBS)

Guess who's back?! That's right, Rob Gronkowski, the best tight end in the NFL (as of last time he played), has been medically cleared and although he is questionable, will probably play. The return of Gronk will greatly benefit Tom Brady and the Patriots thin receiving corps. He will probably be heavily targeted, as receiver Danny Amendola is out (again) with a concussion. The defense is also banged up, with linebacker Jerod Mayo out for the season and corner Aqib Talib out with a hip injury. Alas, I think the return of Gronk powers the Pats over the Jets.

Eagles (3-3) over Cowboys (3-3) (Dallas at Philadelphia, 1:00, FOX)

This will be a tightly-contested battle for first place in the NFC East. The Cowboys will be without running back DeMarco Murray (MCL sprain) and, for the first time in his career, DeMarcus Ware (quad). The Eagles will again be without starting quarterback Michael Vick (hamstring), but backup Nick Foles played very well last week, winning NFC Offensive Player of the Week after lighting up Tampa for 296 yards and four total touchdowns. These are two prolific offenses (usually) and somewhat porous defenses, and I think the Eagles will win a barn-burner in Philly.

Bears (4-2) over Redskins (1-4) (Chicago at Washington, 1:00, FOX)

The Bears offense has looked pretty good, while the Redskins defense has looked pretty bad. The Bears have big weapons in receivers Alshon Jeffery, who broke a Bears receiving record a couple of weeks ago (218 yards), and Brandon Marshall, who had nine catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns in last week's win vs. the Giants, as well as running back Matt Forte. RGIII will get to his pre-injury form eventually, but this week the Bears will light up the bad Washington defense.

Panthers (2-3) over Rams (3-3) (St. Louis at Carolina, 1:00, FOX)

Both of these teams struggle to begin the season, but have come on strong lately. The same can be said about the quarterbacks. Sam Bradford has led the Rams to two straight wins after struggling during a three-game losing streak. During the winning streak, he is 31-50 for 339 yards and six touchdowns. Meanwhile, Cam Newton has played more like the number one pick in te 2011 draft recently, going 20-26 for 242 yards passing and 30 yards rushing with three passing touchdowns and one on the ground last week in a rout if Minnesota. This could go either way, but I think the talented Newton leads Carolina to a win at home.

Chargers (3-3) over Jaguars (0-6) (San Diego at Jacksonville, 1:00, CBS)

The Jaguars may be the worst team in the NFL at 0-6, and may not win a game all season, but they played inspired football last week against the undefeated Broncos, coming within as little as two points before the Broncos pulled away, and receiver Justin Blackmon is a stud, finishing with 14 catches for 190 yards in the loss. That being said, the Chargers are coming off a big Monday night win over the Colts, holding them to only six points. Phillip Rivers has looked like the Phillip Rivers of old, which has been aided by the emergence of rookie wide receiver Keenan Allen (out of California),, who has had over 100 yards receiving in two straight games. The rising Chargers should have no trouble with the lowly Jaguars.

Titans (3-3) over 49ers (4-2) (San Francisco at Tennessee, 4:05, FOX)

This is my upset pick of the week. I am not at all sure, or even fully confident, on this one, as the Niners have won three straight and the Titans have lost two in a row. But it's worth noting that San Francisco's three wins were against St. Louis, Houston, and Arizona, three teams that are a combined 8-11, and Tennessee's two losses were vs. Kansas City and Seattle, two teams that are a combined 12-1, and the Titans had Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. This week Jake Locker, who guided the Titans to a 3-1 start with six touchdowns and zero interceptions, returns in place of Fitzpatrick, who was 0-2 with one touchdown and three interceptions. For an upset to materialize, Chris Johnson needs to step it up as well, rushing for just 71 total yards the last three games. The Niners are a very good team, and with Colin Kaepernick and Frank Gore playing well, will probably win this game, but I'm going to go for the upset.

Packers (3-3) over Browns (3-3) (Cleveland at Green Bay, 4:25, CBS) 

I want to think the Browns will win, as I always do, and they might, but Brandon Weeden is not a good quarterback. Even with injuries to receivers Randall Cobb and James Jones, the Packers still have Aaron Rodgers, a very good quarterback. Plus, in a game that might come down to the running game, the Packers have a better running back in rookie Eddie Lacy (out of Alabama), as opposed to the Browns, who only have two active running backs in Willis McGahee and Fozzy Whitaker (three, if you count fullback Chris Ogbannaya). Cleveland's defense will keep them in this game, and Weeden has weapons in Josh Gordon and Jordon Cameron (plus Tori Gurley, who, although he was just signed off the practice squad and has only one catch this year, Is a 6'4", 230 pound receiver), but I can't see Weeden rallying the Browns to a win in a close game, so I'll go Packers. I hope I'm wrong.

Chiefs (6-0) over Texans (2-4) (Houston at Kansas City, 4:25, CBS)

I believe in Case Keenum. I believe in  Case Keenum so much that I picked him up in my fantasy league. Who is Case Keenum, you ask? He is the starting quarterback for the Houston Texans. He was third-string before Matt Schaub was injured last week, and he jumped backup T.J. Yates and will make his first career start this weekend. He's a second year player out of Houston, where he broke NCAA passing records in a prolific offense. Yes, the competition was weak, which is probably why he was an undrafted free agent, but it's hard to argue with the college stats. I think Case Keenum can be a good NFL quarterback. But this week, Houston plays the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs, and Keenum will be making his first career start vs. the best defense in the league at Arrowhead Stadium, a very hostile environment. I don't think Keenum will perform that poorly, but I do think the Chiefs will win again.

Ravens (3-3) over Steelers (1-4) (Baltimore at Pittsburgh, 4:25, CBS)

I don't like either of these teams, mostly because I'm a Browns fan, but also because they've been ugly to watch so far this season. The Steelers finally got their first win of the season last week, when they beat the Jets 19-6. Their defense helped them get their first win, but their offense is still a work in progress. As is the Ravens' offense, as they only rushed for 47 yards last week in a 19-17 loss to Green Bay, and are the NFL's second worst rushing team, ahead of only the Jaguars. I don't think either of these teams are very good, but I think the Ravens will get back on track this weekend.

Broncos (6-0) over Colts (4-2) (Denver at Indianapolis, 8:30, NBC)

These are two very good teams, and this should be an exciting game to watch. The Broncos got a little scare from the winless Jaguars, but I think that might have been partly because they were uninterested. They won't be uninterested this week, as it's a primetime matchup and Peyton Manning's return to Indy. The Colts didn't look good in a Monday night loss vs. the Chargers, but they tend to play better against the elite teams in the league (see 49ers, Seahawks). I think this will be a close one, but I think Peyton Manning plays, well, like Peyton Manning in his return, and keeps the Broncos undefeated.

Vikings (1-4) over Giants (0-6) (Minnesota at New York, 8:30 Mon, ESPN)

These are two not very good teams. The Giants are awful so far this season, with Eli seeming to throw at least a few interceptions a game, and the defense not being able to stop anybody. For the Vikings, they've shuffled quarterbacks, and will start a new one this week. Josh Freeman, who was released by the Bucanneers earlier this season after being benched, will get the start. I think he'll play better than he did to start the season, because he has a change of scenery and a new coach. He also has Adrian Peterson, who is still Adrian Peterson. If Eli cuts down on the turnovers, I think the Giants can win, but I just don't see that happening anytime soon.

Week 6 NFL Picks

Again, I apologize for not doing picks last week. As you may observe, I use a lot of italics in this post. That's just coincidence; I don't have an italics addiction. Or maybe I do. Anyway, My record so far is 18-11. Now for the picks:

Bengals (3-2) over Bills (2-3) (Cincinnati at Buffalo, 1:00, CBS)

The Bengals are coming off a big win vs. the Patriots that saw them stop Tom Brady's touchdown streak and end New England's winning streak, and the bills are coming off a loss to the Browns that saw them lose their starting quarterback (E.J. Manuel) for 4-8 weeks. They signed Thad Lewis of their practice squad and are starting him. The Bengals held Tom Brady without a touchdown. They shouldn't have trouble with Thad Lewis.

Browns (3-2) over Lions (3-2) (Detroit at Cleveland, 1:00, FOX)

This game hinges on two key factors in my opinion: 1. How Brandon Weeden plays; 2. If Calvin Johnson plays. Weeden looked better last week in relief of Brian Hoyer than he did the first two weeks if the season, but we'll see if and how he improves.  As evidenced last week, The Lions are a very different team without Johnson. They need him to get the offense going. If Johnson plays and produces, the Lions will probably win.

Chiefs (5-0) over Raiders (2-3) (Oakland at Kansas City, 1:00, CBS)

Terrelle Pryor has looked pretty impressive as the Raiders' quarterback so far this season, but Pryor an the 2-3 Raiders will be in for a tough test against the Chiefs' league-leading defense, averaging just 11.6 ppg against. On the other side, quarterback Alex Smith has been solid and running back Jamaal Charles has been stellar for the Chiefs. The Chiefs should be able to move to 6-0.

Vikings (1-3) over Panthers (1-3) (Carolina at Minnesota, 1:00, FOX)

There are some questions facing the Vikings Sunday. First is the quarterback position. They signed former Bucaneers QB Josh Freeman this week, but Matt Cassel will start again this week. Second, how will Adrian Peterson respond after losing his son this week. I believe AP will respond by tearing up the Panthers, who have offensive problems of their own.

Jets (3-2) over Steelers (0-4) (Pittsburgh at New York, 1:00, CBS)

Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith has looked impressive so far, and the Steelers have looked far less than impressive so far. The Jets are coming off a big Monday night win, but they lost tight end Kellen Winslow for four games due to a drug suspension. Nonetheless, I think the rising Jets take care of the struggling Steelers.

Eagles (2-3) over Bucaneers (0-4) (Philadelphia at Tampa Bay, 1:00, FOX)

Michael Vick will not play for the Eagles Sunday. Instead, Nick Foles will start, and I think he is still better than Tampa rookie starter Mike Glennon. I also think Eagles running back LeSean McCoy will have a big game (and hoping he does, as he is on my fantasy team). This one might be close, but I see the Eagles coming out on top, possibly with some help from kicker Alex Henery (also on my fantasy team).

Packers (2-2) over Ravens (3-2) (Green Bay at Baltimore, 1:00, FOX)

The Ravens have rebounded from some rough games, starting 3-2. But the Packers are still the Packers, with Aaron Rodgers throwing to Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, and James Jones, and rookie running back Eddie Lacy, who looked impressive again last week. The Pack win what could be a very close game.

Texans (2-3) over Rams (2-3) (St. Louis at Houston, 1:00, FOX)

I almost thought about picking the Rams in this one, but the Rams gave up 20 points to the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. Texans quarterback Matt Schaub has been awful the last few weeks, but the Texans still have running back Arian Foster and stud defensive end J.J. Watt, the heart and soul of this team. The Texans can and should win this one, but don't be suprised if Schaub's pick-six streak continues.

Jaguars (0-5) over Broncos (5-0)

Haha, not even in an alternate universe.

Broncos (5-0) over Jaguars (0-5) (Jacksonville at Denver, 4:05, CBS) 

On, my. This may get ugly. The league's best team at home against the league's worst team. I predict Peyton comes out by the 3rd quarter, and then my boy Brock Osweiler, the 6'8" backup out of Arizona State, gets to come in and do some damage. Good news for the Jaguars: Blaine Gabbert is not playing. Instead, backup Chad Henne will start. Actually, I'm not sure if this is good or bad news. Either way, Denver will blow the poor Jags out.

Seahawks (4-1) over Titans (3-2) (Tennessee at Seattle, 4:05, CBS)

I almost thought about taking the upset. The Titans have looked pretty good, even in a loss to the unbeaten Chiefs last week, and especially considering they are starting backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. But the Seahawks are at home with the 12th man, and despite a loss to the steeling Colts last week, are still a juggernaut team with the likes of Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, and Richard Sherman. I have the 'Hawks, but don't be shocked if it's close.

Saints (5-0) over Patriots (4-1) (New Orleans at New England, 4:25, FOX)

The Patriots were held to two field goals by the Bengals last week, and the Saints have a much better defense than last year. Tom Brady will probably be without tight end Rob Gronkowski for at least one more week, but I think he starts a new touchdown streak this week. Alas, I don't think he'll be able to catch up to the Saints' high-flying attack.

49ers (3-2) over Cardinals (3-2) (Arizona at San Francisco, 4:25, FOX)

The Niners have gotten back to their winning ways, cruising against St. Louis and Houston. Both of these team have very good defenses, and I think the offenses will be a key factor. While the 49ers offense has gotten back to being good, the Cards' offense has continued to struggle. I say 49ers win a third straight at Candlestick.

Cowboys (2-3) over Redskins (1-3) (Washington at Dallas, 8:30, NBC)

This one could be another shootout for Tony Romo and the Cowboys. It's two not very good defenses squaring off, and I think Romo, who just threw for 506 yards last week, will tear up the porous 'Skins defense. Luckily for Romo, I don't believe it will come down to an interception on the final drive.

Colts (4-1) over Chargers (2-3) (Indianapolis at San Diego, 8:30 Mon. ESPN)

The Colts have put themselves among the elite teams in the NFL, with wins over the 49ers and Seahawks. The Chargers, even with a resurgent Phillip Rivers, have somewhat struggled, losing to the Raiders last week. This one may Be a barn-burner, and I think Andrew Luck and the Colts come out on top.

NFL Week 5 Analysis

Hey guys, what's up. I apologize for not doing week 5 picks. I was really busy last week, but I will try not to miss anymore. I went 11-3 last week, much improved from the 7-8 the week before. That brings my overall record to 18-11. Now let's look into the results of this past weekend's games.

Bills (2-3) 24 Browns (3-2) 37

MVP: Browns Punt Returner Travis Benjamin-Benjamin broke a Browns franchise record 179 punt return yards, 79 of them on a game-changing touchdown in the 2nd quarter.

Other Candidates: Browns D (INT return for TD, 5 sacks)

Unsung Hero: Browns QB Brandon Weeden-Weeden stepped in for injured quarterback Brian Hoyer in the first quarter and performed pretty well considering he only had one day of practice coming into the game. He finished with 197 yards, one touchdown, and 0 interceptions. He allowed the Browns defense and special teams to win the game.

Story of the Game: QB Injuries-Early in the game, Browns starting quarterback Brian Hoyer slid alwardly and was helped off the field with a knee injury. It was later revealed he has a torn ACL, and is out for the season. Brandon Weeden took over for him and was unspectacular but solid. Later E.J. Manuel took a hard hot to the knee and left with an LCL sprain. He'll be out for 4-8 weeks. Jeff Tuel took over for him and struggled.

Saints (5-0) 26 Bears (3-2) 18

MVP: Saints TE Jimmy Graham-I thought about going with Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery, even in a losing effort, because he broke a Bears franchise record with 218 receiving yards. But Jimmy Graham tied an NFL record for tight ends with his fourth consecutive game of 100+ yards receiving (135 yards on 10 receptions)

Other Candidates: Jeffery (218 yards on 10 receptions), Saints QB Drew Brees (29-35, 288 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Saints D-The Saints defense allowed Drew Brees and the offense to get off to an early lead, sacking Jay Cutler twice and only allowing 18 points

Story of the Game: Recieving Records-Both Saints tight end Jimmy Graham and Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery either broke or tied receiving records Sunday. Graham tied an NFL record for tight ends with his fourth straight 100+ yard receiving game, and Jeffery had a Bears franchise-record 218 receiving yards.

Patriots (4-1) 6 Bengals (3-2) 13

MVP: Bengals D-The Bengals defense held Tom Brady an the Patriots to two field goals, snapping Brady's streak of 52 straight games with a touchdown pass. The Bengals had 4 sacks, 1 interception, and a big goal line stand in the fourth quarter

Other Candidates: Bengals Kicker Mike Nugent (2-2 on FG)

Unsung Hero: Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis-Green-Ellis, like everyone on both offenses Sunday, wasn't insanely productive, finishing with 67 yards on 19 carries, but with electrifying rookie Gio Bernard taking carries from him, and on his way to taking his job, Green-Ellis ran hard and had the only touchdown of the game on a fourth down run.

Story of the Game: Brady's TD Streak Snapped-As was mentioned earlier, the Bengals ended Tom Brady's streak of 52 consecutive games with a touchdown pass, falling two short of Drew Brees's NFL record 54.

Lions (3-2) 9 Packers (2-2) 22

MVP: Packers WR James Jones-Jones finished with 4 receptions for 127 yards and a TD, the one touchdown being a 83-yard spark in the third quarter. 

Other Candidates: Aaron Rodgers (20-30, 274 yards, 1 TD), Packers D (5 sacks, 9 pts. Allowed), Packers K Mason Crosby (5-5 on FG)

Unsung Hero: Packers RB Eddie Lacy-The rookie had 99 yards on 23 carries in his return from a concussion, helping the offensive cause. The running game is key for the Packers, and Eddie Lacy was productive.

Story of the Game: Megatron Out-Lions star wide receiver Calvin Johnson did not play due to a knee injury, and that significantly hampered Detroit's offense. Without Johnson, the leading receiver for the Lions was tight end Brandon Pettigrew, who had 59 yards. It also allowed Green Bay to focus more on running back Reggie Bush, who had only 44 yards.

Chiefs (5-0) 26 Titans (3-2) 17

MVP: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles-Charles continued his impressive season and helped the Chiefs continue their impressive season by rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown while also adding 37 yards on five receptions.

Other Candidates: Chiefs D (3 turnovers, 2 sacks, TD)

Unsung Hero: Chiefs K Ryan Succop-Last week was a good week for kickers, including Succop, who was 4-4 on field goals of 29, 24, 33, and 48 yards. He out-kicked counterpart Rob Bironas, who missed a 39-yarder late. Without his leg the Chiefs would have lost this game.

Story of the Game: Turnovers-Coming into this game, these two teams were tied atop the league in turnover margin (plus-9), and there were five turnovers in the game. Kansas City scored 13 points off 2 interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown, and Tennessee scores a touchdown off an interception and fumble recovery.

Seahawks (4-1) 28 Colts (4-1) 34

MVP: Andrew Luck-Luck continued leading the Colts' ascent to a top team against Seattle. He was 16-29 for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns. An argument could be made for receiver T.Y. Hilton, who had 140 yards and two touchdowns, but Luck is the backbone of this offense.

Other Candidates: T.Y. Hilton (5 receptions, 140 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Colts D-Looking at the stats, it doesn't look like the Colts defense stopped Seattle from producing. They scored 28 points and 423 total yards. But Indy had a blocked field goal that Delano Howell returned 61 yards for a touchdown, and they picked off Seahawks QB Russell Wilson on the final drie to seal the win.

Story of the Game: Playing from Behind-The Colts trailed for most of this game before winning it. The Seahawks jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter, then the Colts led 14-12 in the second before Seattle scores twice to make it 19-17 at half. The Seahawks held the lead until the fourth quarter, when Indy took the lead for good.

Jaguars (0-5) 20 Rams (2-3) 34

MVP: Rams QB Sam Bradford-There weren't many worthy MVPs from this game between two bad teams, but Bradford went 19-34 for 222 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Other Candidates: Jaguars WR Justin Blackmon (5 receptions, 136 yards, TD), Rams D (2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery, 2 INT, TD)

Unsung Hero:  Rams RB Zac Stacy-Again, hard to find someone really worthy from this game. Stacy, the rookie running back who shared carries with Daryl Richardson, gained 78 yards on 14 carries, and might see more carries with Richardson only gaining 48 yards on 13 carries.

Story of the Game: Blackmon Returns-The Jaguar offense was more productive than it has been in a long time (though still not very productive), scoring 20 points. That was partly thanks to the return of second-year #1 receiver Justin Blackmon from a four game suspension for substance abuse. He had 136 yards on 5 receptions and a touchdown. And that was with Blaine Gabbert throwing to him.

Ravens (3-2) 26 Dolphins (3-2) 23

MVP: Ravens RB Ray Rice-The Ravens rediscovered their running game vs. the Dolphins, totaling 133 yards on the ground, led by Rice, who had 74 yards and two touchdowns. He also had six receptions for 28 yards.

Other Candidates: Ravens WR Torrey Smith (6 receptions, 121 yards)

Unsung Hero: Ravens D-The Ravens defense played decent all game, but they really came up big on the last drive. After the Dolphins mounted a furious comeback to come within three, they had the ball in field goal range with about a minute to go, and Elvis Dumervil sacked Ryan Tannehill to put Miami further back. It was one of the six sacks the Ravens had on the day. Two plays later, Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis missed a 57-yard field goal.

Story of the Game: Dolphins Drop 2nd Straight Since Starting 3-0-After an impressive 3-0 start to the season, the Dolphins have lost the past two weeks. That can partly be blamed on the offensive line, who has allowed an NFL-leading 24 sacks. 

Eagles (2-3) 36 Giants (0-5) 21

MVP: Eagles QB Nick Foles-Foles came in for the injured Michael Vick late in the second quarter and led the Eagles to the win. He went 16-25 for 197 yards and two touchdowns, performing admirely. 

Other Candidates: Eagles WR DeSean Jackson (7 receptions, 132 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: Eagles K Alex Henery-Henery kicked a career-high five field goals, going 5-5 (40, 27, 29, 36, and 41 yards) and scoring half of the Eagles' 36 points. I also started him on my fantasy team last week. 

Story of the Game: Vick Injured (Suprise, Suprise)-Eagles quarterback Michael Vick injured his hamstring on a run in the second quarter. Nick Foles came in and played well, and it looks like Nick Foles might have to lead them again this week, with Michael Vick unlikely to play.

Panthers (1-3) 6 Cardinals (3-2) 22

MVP: Cardinals D-The Cards D held Cam Newton and the Panthers to two field goals and 353 total yards. Thy also picked Newton off three times, and sacked him seven times, one of those being from defensive end Calais Campbell for a safety. They also had a fumble recovery.

Other Candidates: Panthers D (2 sacks, 3 INT, 250 total yards allowed)

Unsung Hero: Cardinals LB Daryl Washington-Washington heavily contributed to Arizona's defensive effort in his return from a four-game suspension  for substance abuse. He had two sacks and an interception, making a good defense even scarier.

Story of the Game: Defense, Defense, and... More Defense-This was definitely a defensive game. Total between both teams, there were 31 points, 603 total yards, 7 turnovers, nine sacks, and a safety.

Broncos (5-0) 51 Cowboys (2-3) 48

MVP: Broncos QB Peyton Manning-If the Cowboys would have won, this spot would have easily been filled by Dallas quarterback Tony Romo, who broke a Cowboys franchise record with 506 yards passing. But Peyton was really really good too, going 33-42 for 414 yards and four passing touchdowns, although he also through his first interception if the season. Heck, Manning even rushed for a touchdown Sunday. PEYTON MANNING IS A GOD.

Other Candidates: Cowboys QB Tony Romo (25-36, 506 yards, 5 TD, INT), Broncos TE Julius Thomas (9 receptions, 122 yards, 2 TD), Cowboys WR Terrance Williams (4 receptions, 151 yards, TD), Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (6 receptions, 141 yards, 2 TD)

Unsung Hero: Broncos RB Knowshon Moreno-This game was a shootout, with both quarterbacks putting up big numbers through the air, but Moreno contributed too. He had 19 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown, as well as five receptions for 57 yards.

Story of the Game: Offense, Offense, and... More Offense-How about some gaudy stats: Between the two teams, there were 1,093 total yards of offense, 884 passing yards, 99 points, and 58 first downs. How about a fun fact:  The 51 points the Broncos scored Sunday are as much as their next opponent, the Jaguars, have scored all season. Next week is going to be ugly.

Texans (2-3) 3 49ers (3-2) 34

MVP: 49ers D-The 49ers tenacious D was at its best Sunday night, allowing only three points and four turnovers, one an interception returned for a touchdown. They gave the Texans and struggling quarterback Matt Schaub fits all night.

Other Candidates: 49ers RB Frank Gore (17 carries, 83 yards, TD)

Unsung Hero: 49ers CB Tramaine Brock-Brock was part of that tea axioms 49ers defense Sunday night. He had two of the Niners three interceptions, including one he returned 18 yards for a touchdown, an he almost had a third pick.

Story of the Game: Schaub's Pick-Six Struggles-Matt Schaub threw another pick-six in this game, making it four straight game he's thrown an interception returned for a touchdown. He has struggled in three straight Texans' losses, causing some to call for his benching.

Charger (2-3) 17 Raiders (2-3) 27

MVP: Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor-Pryor led the Raiders to the win in "Monday Morning Football", finishing 18-23 with 221 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also added 31 yards on the ground, including a scramble on a broken play late that led to a field goal and helped Oakland seal the game.

Other Candidates: Raiders D (4 sacks, 3 INT, 2 fumble recoveries, TD)

Unsung Hero: Raiders CB Charles Woodson-Woodson, type former All-Pro corner, had an interception and a fumble recovery, which he returned for a touchdown. With that touchdown, Woodson tied the NFL record for most career defensive touchdowns, with 13.

Story if the Game: " Monday Morning Football"-The San Diego at Oakland game started at 11:35 pm (8:35 in Oakland) because the Oakland A's has a playoff game Sunday afternoon, and if you didn't already know, the Raiders and A's share O.co Colliseum.

Jets (3-2) 30 Falcons (1-4) 28

MVP: Jets QB Geno Smith-The rookie once again led the Jets to a come-from-behind victory, finishing 16-20 for 199 yards and three touchdowns, and engineering the final drive that ended in a game-winning field goal. Thus far this season he has shown great veteran-like poise.

Unsung Hero: Jets K Nick Folk-Smith may have engineered TE game-winning drive, but it was Folk who kicked the game-winning 46 yard field goal as time expired. He also kicked a 22 yarder and 36 yarder, going 3-3 on the night.

Story of the Game: Julio Out for Season-The Falcons suffered a big blow after their loss to the Jets when it was announced Tuesday that star receiver Julio Jones could be out for the season with a foot injury he sustained Monday night.

•Welcome Back-Some key players returned from four-game suspensions for substance abuse last week, including Jaguars wide receiver Justin Blackmon and Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington, who mad very noticeable impacts in their returns.

•Field Goal Frenzy-Maybe it was just me, but it seemed like Week five was a big week for kickers. Every game had at least one field goal, and most had multiple field goals. Four kickers made three field goals, four made four field goals, and three kickers made five field goals.
