NBA Bubble Preview

It'll be 141 days between March 11th, the day the last NBA game was played, and July 30th, when the NBA restarts. I point that out because in the over four months since, it's simultaneously hard to tell if March was closer to a week ago or seven years ago. Frankly, the world has just changed. The COVID-19 Pandemic is still as much, or more likely more so, a threat. The battle for racial equality in our judicial and policing systems is still happening. News seems to break every thirty minutes that makes it difficult to determine what exactly is our "new normal".

This is the world in which the NBA is trying to relaunch itself. Twenty-two teams are all gathered in three hotels in Walt Disney World, prepared to play eight games plus a traditional length playoffs. Everything is different outside the game, but the rims are still ten feet off the ground and the game is comprised of four twelve minute quarters. So while acknowledging that social, political, and health issues are very important and need to be discussed, we at Head In The Game will be taking a look at the on-the-court action of the NBA Bubble to take a short break between dealing with all the stuff surrounding it in the world and instead talk about the love of joy that comes from sports, in this case basketball.

8th Seed In The East

Troy: The Eastern Conference is in a very different situation than the West. In reality, the Wizards don't have a great chance at making the 8th seed. They would have to gain a couple games on either the Nets or the Magic and then win a play-in game against them. That means it's actually a contest of who drops to the 8th seed rather than gains it. I think between injuries and opt-outs, the Brooklyn Nets are going to be the ones to drop just enough games to fall to the 8th seed, even if they have the best merch possible.

Grant: The Washington Wizards are technically in the bubble, but their chances of making the playoffs sit well outside the bubble. Even with the Brooklyn Nets fielding a skeleton squad, Washington has too much ground to cover in just eight games to get into the top eight. However, the hometown Magic should be able to surpass the ravaged Nets for the seven seed.

8th Seed In The West

Troy: The Western Conference is going to be much more competitive than the East at the bottom of the playoff seeding. It seems like it's going to come down to the Grizzlies, Pelicans, and Trail Blazers for the final spot. Regardless of who it is, I believe this will come down to a play-in game for the 8th seed. I'm picking the Memphis Grizzlies based on them being the best team during the regular season and having the added motivation of everyone assuming that the Pelicans will catch them.

Grant: The fight for the eight seed in the West is a lot more compelling than the East, as there are five teams withing five games of each other. The Grizzlies currently hold the eighth spot, but the Trail Blazers, Pelicans, Kings, and Spurs are hot on their tail. I am part of the "everyone" assuming that the New Orleans Pelicans will catch the Grizzlies. The Pellies have a healthy Zion and play the easiest schedule of any team in the bubble.

Which Mascot Would You Want To Quarantine With

Troy: Call it blind fandom or nostalgia, but I want to be quarantined with Boomer from the Indiana Pacers. The panther(?) seems friendly but not too friendly, which seems important when you're stuck with someone for an indefinite amount of time. Congrats on making the Mascot Hall of Fame, by the way. Also, there's a Mascot Hall of Fame.

Grant: I thought about picking Boomer as well, because he is one of the few mascots I have been in the same room as. But I'll go with a mascot from a different country. That's right, I want to be quarantined with The Raptor (of the Toronto Raptors, of course). I've always wanted to hang out with a dinosaur. There should be some kind of island or park people can go to and hang out with dinosaurs. It would be great. No way that idea could go wrong in any way.

Which Player Would You Want To Quarantine With

Troy: Call me a homer, but I'm sticking with the Indiana Pacers and taking Myles Turner. He's into LEGOs, Star Wars, and Spider-Man, which makes him ideal to be stuck with. He might even teach me yoga, who knows. Again, no one can tell how long we'll be stuck inside except for maybe every other country on Earth.

Grant:  As fun as it might be to drink with J.R. Smith, eat gummy bears with Dion Waiters, go fishing with Ben Simmons, or break quarantine with Lou Williams, I can't choose anyone other than my guy Giannis Antetekounmpo. He seems like a fun-loving dude. Also, Grant and Giannis has a nice ring to it.

34 reasons why we love Giannis - OnMilwaukee
Just look at that smile

Team Of Destiny

Troy: There is no other team that has more experience with destiny than the Toronto Raptors. From the time Kawhi Leonard's shot to beat the 76ers in last year's playoffs, it was clear that they were the team the universe wanted to win the championship. The Raptors lost a player that had one of the greatest playoff runs in history and yet they actually are entering the bubble with a better winning percentage than they had last season. If any team is going to win this wacky and wild situation, it'll be the team that got its name because of the success of a Jeff Goldblum movie.

Grant: I don't really believe in destiny, and if things are predetermined, none of these teams scream DESTINY to me. But since I need to provide an answer, I'll come up with one. I would side my colleague and say the Raptors, but they were last year's Team of Destiny. The way 2020 has gone, this year's Team of Destiny has to be a team that needs a miracle to win it all. One team that would fit that description is the Orlando Magic. They are also playing in their home city and are literally called the "Magic".

Please follow

Who Wins The East

Troy: Bucks. In. Six. The universe obviously wants the Toronto Raptors to win every game they play, but the Milwaukee Bucks employ a man named Giannis. I just don't think anyone is going to be able to figure out how to get past the Greek Freak down in Orlando.

Grant: What Troy said. The Bucks were one game away from the Finals last year, and this time they don't have to worry about Kawhi Leonard.

The Not-So-Simple History Of Why We Call Dollars 'Bucks' | HuffPost
Bucks

Who Wins The West

Troy: The battle for LA is heading to Orlando. I keep going back and forth between the Clippers and Lakers. I like them both a lot and particularly like the Clippers bench, but I think when the situation gets weird you go with the go to guy. That's why I'm picking the Lakers to win the West. The grey in his beard and the sparkle in his eye leads me to believe that LeBron James is going to do everything that the laws of science allow to be done to win games.

Grant: What Troy said. The two Los Angeles teams are definitely the favorites, and I could see either getting to the Finals. But only one of those teams has LeBron James, which is why I'm going with the Lakers to win the West.

Somebody's been hitting that Touch of Grey

Bubble MVP

Troy: To be clear, this is just for the 8 seeding games and not the playoffs. That being cleared up, I'm taking Damian Lillard. I know, I know. I picked both the Grizzlies and Pelicans ahead of them for the 8th seed. Yet I think the only reason the Trail Blazers will be breathing down everyone's neck is because Dam is going to go off in these games. If he averages 35+ points and 8+ assists, I will not be surprised. If anyone is going to put up video game numbers, it might as well be Lillard.

Grant:  In an eight-game sprint, the MVP race is wide open. I could go with the player who'll probably win the actual MVP (Giannis) or the player who might've won it had the season not been halted (LeBron), But since this is an eight-game crapshoot, I'll take a shot in the dark and go with Ben Simmons. He has taken a lot of heat, but he's a strong defender and can go for a triple-double any night. I'm also going to make a bold prediction and say that he makes at least two three-pointers in the bubble. He'll be key in regards to how well the 76ers do.

NBA: Ben Simmons struggled throwing a fish back, NBA Twitter had jokes
When he threw this fish back, he missed the ocean. The entire ocean.

Which Player Would You Want As A Cornhole Partner

Troy: CP3 actually stands for Cornhole Points 3 because all Chris Paul is going to do is get it in the hole. Paul is both an excellent passer and a great bowler, which leads me to believe he'll be a great cornholer. I'd also like to take this point to say that it has come to our attention at Head in the Game that some people have been referring to the fine backyard game of cornhole as "bags". This kind of foolishness will not be tolerated on our blog and our official stance is that anyone that call it "bags" is a big fat poopoo head.

Grant: To find a bubble cornhole partner, I did some research. I discovered that the Spurs held a team cornhole tournament and the winners were Tyler Zeller and athletic development coach Kelly Forbes. Zeller grew up in Indiana, so it probably wasn't the first time he had thrown a bean bag at a wooden board. I feel confident that he would be able to carry us to victory (or at least a close loss).

Chris's partner would actually be Jake from State Farm
Chris's partner would actually be Jake from State Farm

NBA Champion

Troy: Bucks. In. Six? Yes, I'm saying that Brandon Jennings' prediction way back in 2013 was not about their, at the time, current series against the Celtics but rather about the 2020 NBA Finals. The Milwaukee Bucks are a well constructed team around the current best player in the league. The biggest question mark is if Khris Middleton or someone else will be able to step up and be the second guy in late game situations.

Grant: BUCKS. IN. SIX. Okay, it might take seven games for the Milwaukee Bucks to topple the kings of the West, but I believe this is the year Giannis gets his first ring. The Bucks are a well-built team. They have a superstar, a good coach, and quality role players. The key, as Troy touched on, will be how guys like Khris Middleton, Eric Bledsoe, and Brook Lopez perform in crucial moments.

9 questions ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks' franchise-altering ...
Giannis and co. have their eyes on the prize

2020 MLB Preview

Finally, it's here. The 2020 Major League Baseball season kicks off tonight. It won't be a normal season (in many ways), but with a still ongoing pandemic and a dispute over money that threatened to cancel Major League Baseball in 2020, I'll take any season at this point. The regular 162-game marathon has been replaced by a 60-game sprint this year, meaning there is much less room for error. That, combined with the three-batter minimum for relievers and the universal DH, will lead to different managing strategies and lineup configurations. It will be interesting how teams approach this odd season.

In Head in the Game's 2020 MLB Preview, Troy and I took a stab at predicting some major award winners (MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year) and the teams that will meet in the World Series. We also each gave our favorite MLB player name, because we love fun names. Speaking of names, in the wake of the Washington Football Team's overdue name change, we took a shot at renaming the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves. But before we get to all that, we decided to share some tips to help mirror a true ballpark experience at home, since fans can't currently go to games.

Note: This was published before the owners ratified an agreement to expand the postseason to 16 teams for 2020 (the top two in each division and the best two teams in each league who aren't top two in their division).

Best way to Emulate the Ballpark Experience at Home

Troy: I would like to take this opportunity to present my newest product launch that is sure to bring the ballpark experience to your home. Basically I go and buy normally priced hot dogs and popcorn, stand just close enough for you to smell them, and then you pay me at least four times above normal market price for them. For $5 I'll even add in a bottle of water with an amount of condensation that you didn't know was scientifically possible.

Grant: I also have a new product I am launching. I have recorded the dumbest and most annoying fan chants and crowd sounds and put them on one CD, allowing you to have the sounds of a regular baseball game from the comfort of your own home. The CD includes classics like "you suck" and "we want a pitcher, not a belly itcher", a booing section for when pitchers try to pick a runner off more than once in a single at-bat, and even drum sounds for when you're watching an Astros game.

One thing the absence of fans will take away from us is all the booing when Houston plays on the road

AL MVP

Troy: Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of California of the United States of America of Earth) - I am going bold and controversial right off the bat (pun intended). Trout is the best player in my lifetime and I'm not entirely sure it's close. I think with the season being less than a third of its typical length, Trout's star is just going to shine so much brighter. The biggest thing holding him back is if he decides not to play the entire season.

Grant: Mike Trout (California/Anaheim/Los Angeles Angels in the Outfield)I hope Troy was being sarcastic when he said "bold and controversial", because there's nothing bold or controversial about anything he said. This is the safe pick. Mike Trout is clearly the best player in baseball and arguably the greatest player of all time. He has now confirmed that he will play this year, and even if he misses a few games for the birth of he and his wife's first child, he's the odds-on favorite.

AL MVP Trout still doesn't feel comfortable about this year ...
If Mike Trout can wear a mask while playing, you can wear a mask while shopping

NL MVP

Troy: Bryce Harper (Philadelphia Phillies) - A shorter season means that everyone has less time to pay attention to the entire league. I think this will benefit Harper if he can manage to put up some impressive power numbers.

Grant: Ronald Acuna Jr. (Atlanta Braves) - One of Major League Baseball's most exciting players and biggest ascending stars, Acuna has the chance to follow up an incredible 2019 with an MVP-winning 2020. It would be his third award in three seasons (he won Rookie of the Year in 2018 and a Silver Slugger in 2019).

The Atlanta Braves and the curious case of Ronald Acuna
Ronald Acuna Jr. is among a wave of exciting young players taking the league by storm

AL Cy Young

Troy: Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees) - The report out of summer camp in the Bronx is that in his first simulated game, Cole looked like he was pitching game seven of the World Series. If he can bring that fire throughout the entirety of the season, he's going to be terrifying on the mound.

Grant: Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees) - There's a reason Cole became the highest-paid pitcher in MLB history this past offseason. He's had an ERA (and FIP) under 3.00 each of the last two seasons, and I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it a third straight year under three.

Season preview: Gerrit Cole | Bronx Pinstripes | BronxPinstripes.com
The Yankees were already World Series contenders, and now they have the best pitcher in baseball

NL Cy Young

Troy: Josh Hader (Milwaukee Brewers) - Finally it's time for me to get controversial. A reliever has only won the Cy Young award NINE times throughout the history of Earth, with the last winner being Eric Gagne in 2003. Yet my pick is based on circumstance. A typical five-man rotation would only see a starter throwing a dozen games this year. The long delay and abbreviated summer camp could make relievers extra valuable this season, and Josh Hader is one of the most dominant bullpen guys in the game.

Grant: Luis Castillo (Cincinnati Reds)I agree that a 60-game season might increase the possibility of a reliever winning the Cy Young, but I'm sticking with a starter. Castillo isn't even the number one guy in Cincinnati's stacked rotation (that would be Sonny Gray), but the 2019 All-Star has the highest upside and the nastiest changeup.

Milwaukee Brewers: Josh Hader 2019 Season Report Card
More like Josh Hairder... okay, I'll leave

AL Rookie of the Year

Troy: Luis Robert (Chicago White Sox) - This is going to be a weird year to be a rookie. Obviously it'll be weird for every single player on the field, but rookies won't be allotted the ability to return to the minors if they need some extra at bats. I selected Robert here given his rare talent and due to it looking like he could be an everyday starter.

Grant: Luis Robert (Chicago White Sox) - The highly-regarded prospect has impressed in Spring Training/Summer Camp, showing off his five-tool talent. He will be a fixture in Chicago's new-look lineup this season, and he should be really fun to watch.

White Sox think outfielder Luis Robert is headed for stardom ...
Luis Robert's future is so bright, he has to wear shades

NL Rookie of the Year

Troy: Carter Kieboom (Washington Nationals) - Kieboom has landed into a nice situation here. With Anthony Rendon shifting to the opposite coast and Ryan Zimmerman sitting out the season, third base should be an open position for the young right handed hitter. Add in being on a quality team and he should have plenty of opportunities to display his abilities on the national stage.

Grant: Gavin Lux (Los Angeles Dodgers) - Lux will not start the season in the Majors, so I'm playing from behind here. But the uber-prospect has the skills to make up ground once he's called up, and as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers, he'll have plenty of opportunities, in the spotlight, too.

Dodgers Summer Camp: Gavin Lux Reports To Dodger Stadium
Gavin Lux's future is so bright, he should be wearing shades

Renaming the Indians and Braves

Troy: Cleveland Spiders and Atlanta Hammers - I've picked two names that I believe evoke some history for both clubs. Beginning with Cleveland, I wanted badly to pick the Cleveland Grovers to pay homage to both our 22nd and 24th president, but instead I settled on the Spiders. Spiders was the original name of the Cleveland baseball team until they folded in 1899 following a 20-134 season. Notably Cy Young once pitched for the franchise. Moving down south, the Hammers would pay solute to Hammering Hank Aaron, the long time, and possibly rightful, all time leader in home runs. Aaron played for nine seasons in Atlanta, even longer with the franchise while they were in Milwaukee, and the Atlanta Hammers would be a nice nod to one of the African-American pioneers of baseball.

Grant: Cleveland Spiders and Atlanta Thrashers - I am fully onboard with renaming Cleveland's baseball team the Spiders. It was the name of the first professional baseball club in Cleveland, so it has history behind it. Plus, spiders can be deadly creatures, killing more people per year than sharks,  alligators, and bears combined. As for Atlanta, my first thought was the Thrashers, which was the name of the now-defunct Atlanta NHL team (R.I.P.), but I also considered something bird-related, as it would fit the theme of the city's other major men's sports franchises (the Falcons and Hawks). Then I discovered that Thrashers are birds, and the Brown Thrasher is Georgia's state bird. So not only is it a cool-sounding name, it's also relevant to the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

The 1899 Cleveland Spiders still hold the MLB record for worst single-season win-loss record

Best Player Name

Troy: Touki Toussaint (Atlanta Hopefully Hammers) - Touki is apparently a combination of his parents' two surnames (Toussaint and Kiti). Touki Toussaint is just a fun name to say and look at. He is currently on Atlanta's 40 man roster, but it isn't clear if he'll be on the Opening Day roster or not.

Grant: Franchy Cordero (Kansas City Royals) - Troy took my top choice, and Jabari Blash is playing overseas, so I'm going with a guy who was just traded from San Diego to Kansas City. I just like the name Franchy.

Braves' Touki Toussaint shelled in second spring start ...
The man with arguably the coolest name in baseball

World Series Pick

Troy: New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers I think at the end of the day these are just the two most talented teams in baseball. Major League Baseball would be ecstatic if the World Series was played between its two biggest markets and featured several of its biggest stars. P.S. Mookie Betts my Venmo is @t_roystory.

Grant: Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles DodgersI'll go a step further and predict who I think will make the playoffs: Yankees (AL East), Twins (AL Central), Astros (AL West), Rays (Wild Card), Cleveland (Wild Card); Nationals (NL East), Reds (NL Central), Dodgers (NL West), Atlanta (Wild Card), Cubs (Wild Card). If the playoffs are expanded to 16 teams, I'll add the White Sox, Angels, Cardinals, and Mets. At least half of those will probably be incorrect. Speaking of incorrect, let's get to my World Series prediction. Troy is right when he says that the Yankees and Dodgers are the two most talented teams in baseball, but that doesn't mean those two will meet in the Fall Classic. I'll replace the Yankees with another AL East team. The Rays are never the sexiest team, but they are savvy and smart, which is especially important in a unique season like this.

MLS Is Back Tournament Preview

UPDATE: The times they are a changin', oh the times they are a changin'. Since this article was originally published, Nashville SC has withdrawn from the tournament due to a large number of positive COVID-19 tests. As a result of this, their original first opponent in the tournament, Chicago Fire, have moved from Group A to Group B. This makes it so that each group will now have exactly four teams in each and the top two from each group plus the four best third place teams will make the knockout rounds. Down below I have updated my takes for the two groups impacted (Groups A & B) and the schedule.

Major League Soccer is back. This is both a true statement and the on the nose name of the tournament they are playing at the Walt Disney Wide World of Sports. Things have been pretty hectic around Major League Soccer since they last played in March. Threats of a lockout over changes to the league and its Union's collective bargaining agreement loomed over them until they came to an agreement, which resulted in this tournament. Many players have tested positive for COVID since the league began testing. Teams have had to delay travel to Orlando as a result of both positive tests and delays in testing results. A couple of teams have had players test positive after arriving to the "bubble," particularly FC Dallas, who has so far had nine players and one staff member test positive. As a result, Dallas has been completely withdrawn from the tournament. Additionally, we've already had multiple games moved around as a result.

There have been plenty of additional negatives heading into this World Cup-style tournament. In addition to the infections among players and tensions over the CBA negotiations, both the reigning MVP (Carlos Vela) and Defender of the Year (Ike Opara) have opted out of the tournament over concerns of the virus and nagging injuries. Yet there are still plenty of positives. First being the fact that the league is returning and trying to salvage something from an impossible scenario. The second being them introducing a fun style of tournament based on the World Cup. Another positive is that they are trying out plenty of unique broadcast options to test them for when things return to normal. Below you'll find an explanation of the format, previews of each individual group, and a schedule of the event.

Format

The MLS Is Back Tournament is, of course, modeled after the World Cup tournament. Teams were drawn into six different groups featuring members of their same conference. Each group (except for Group A, which features six teams) consists of four teams. Teams play three games against their own group, with the teams with the best results advancing to a sixteen-team knockout tournament. The top two teams from Groups B-F and the top three from Group A will automatically advance to the knockout rounds. Additionally, the three best third-place teams (or fourth-place team from Group A) also advances to the knockouts. Simple enough, right?

Group A - Eastern

Teams - Inter Miami CF, New York City FC, Orlando City FC, Philadelphia Union

What to Watch For? - We've only just gotten underway and things have already been crazy with Group A. They've had not one but two teams exit the group. Nashville SC had to exit the tournament due to concerns over excessive positive Coronavirus tests. As a result, Chicago Fire has moved to Group B to even things out. On the field, the first two match-days saw two one-goal games that featured the first match between the Florida teams and the first 9 AM match between the two teams from former US Capitals.

Best Group Match-Up? - Inter Miami CF vs Orlando City FC - Wednesday July 8th @ 8 PM on ESPN - While I firmly believe that the most critical game for this group's competition will be Philly vs NYCFC, the most interesting match-up will be Inter Miami vs Orlando City due to it being the very first match in the tournament. This is an important match to understand how seriously the players will take this and how the atmosphere will be for this thing. That's not even mentioning that this is the very first time the in-state rivals will face one another.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - Philadelphia Union and NYCFC - NYCFC and Philly are easily the most talented teams. If I was going to pick one as the one to top the tournament, I'd pick Philly based on the continuity of the roster and coaching staff.

Group B - Western

Teams - Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes, Seattle Sounders, Vancouver Whitecaps

What to Watch For? - This should be an interesting group. Thanks to Dallas and Nashville withdrawing from the tournament, this group has had the late addition of the Chicago Fire. Still, you get a Cascadia Cup rivalry between Seattle and Vancouver and one of the more surprising teams of last year with San Jose. The Fire are an absolute mystery. After announcing a move from the suburbs back to Soldier Field in Chicago proper, the Fire underwent a questionable rebrand and waited until deep into the off-season to fire a coach or make any major roster moves.

Best Group Match-Up? - Seattle Sounders vs Vancouver Whitecaps - Monday July 20th @ 10:30 PM on ESPN - This group's slim pickings right now thanks to FC Dallas departing the tournament leaving this group with only three games to pick from. So naturally, this left us with this Cascadia Cup match-up taking center stage.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - Seattle Sounders and San Jose Earthquakes - With only three teams in the group, I am guaranteed to at least get one of these right. Seattle is obviously the reigning MLS Cup champ and didn't lose a ton from the previous season. San Jose was surprisingly good last season, so I think they might continue that in this tournament.

Group C - Eastern

Teams - D.C. United, Montreal Impact, New England Revolution, Toronto FC

What to Watch For? - It's the CAmerican Cup in Group C. In Group C, you can see the team from the national capital, the team named after the American Revolutionary War, and the two most poutine loving clubs. Viewers should have a lot of fun watching one of the most intense rivalries in MLS plus two other teams that also made the playoffs.

Best Group Match-Up? - Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC - Wednesday @ 8 PM on TUDN (and TUDN's Twitter) - The Canadian Classique is always a competitive rivalry match, no matter how good or bad either team is. They usually play each other several times in league play and at least once in the Canadian Championship. Now they get to play in the heat of the Florida moon.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - Toronto FC and Montreal Impact - Toronto FC seems to be the clear choice to win the group. They're the most talented team of the four and have plenty of experience in competitions. The second team is harder to pick out. Montreal got my pick almost by default. I don't love this New England team, and I really don't like how DC started the year.

Group D - Western

Teams - Colorado Rapids, Minnesota United, Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City

What to Watch For? - This is the group with the most parity. Minnesota and Salt Lake both made the playoffs last season, and Colorado just missed out. Kansas City had their worst season in a long time last year but was the most impressive team before the league shut down in March. We also get to see both the Rocky Mountain Cup and the Nicest Rivalry in Sports.

Best Group Match-Up? - Minnesota United vs Sporting Kansas City (aka The Nicest Rivalry In Soccer) - Sunday July 12th @ 8 PM on ESPN - The rivalry that isn't so much a rivalry as it is two fan bases that genuinely seem to like each other. The Loons and SKC both had hot starts to the season before the ish hit the fan in March. SKC seems to have a dynamic attack, while Minnesota is excellent at sitting back and countering.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota United - Out of every group in this competition, this is the one where any single team could win the group. I'd almost guarantee that a third team will be making it out of Group D. I picked SKC and the Loons because I like Sporting's attack and coaching a lot and really like Minnesota's ability to defend and hold onto a lead.

Group E - Eastern

Teams - Atlanta United, Columbus Crew SC, FC Cincinnati, New York Red Bulls

What to Watch For? - We got an ideal match-up in this group between Atlanta and New York. Whenever these teams play, it's always super fast and entertaining. Add on to this The Hell Is Real Derby, which began before Cincinnati was in the league. Columbus-Atlanta is also a pretty good match every time they face off. Columbus is going to be my dark horse, as you'll see below.

Best Group Match-Up? - Atlanta United vs New York Red Bulls - Saturday July 11th @ 8 PM on Fox - As I mentioned above, when Atlanta and New York get together, great soccer is played. Atlanta was dealt a hard blow in the first game of the year when Josef Martinez went down, presumably for the year. The Red Bulls haven't looked fantastic so far in 2020, but facing off against Atlanta should motivate them to show their best game.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - Atlanta United and Columbus Crew - The Crew are my dark horse pick in this competition. I don't know why, but I have a strong feeling about Columbus having a strong showing. Atlanta may have lost their top scorer, but I feel they're still talented enough to make it through to the knockout rounds.

Group F - Western

Teams - Houston Dynamo, LAFC, LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers

What to Watch For? - In this 100%, totally random draw, we ended up with LAFC and the LA Galaxy in Group F. LAFC is insanely talented and I feel will have no problem winning this group. Still, the Galaxy, despite not being great since their crosstown foe entered the league, has done nothing but pose as LAFC's toughest opponent. I don't expect much from Houston, but Portland is going to give this group some headaches.

Best Group Match-Up? - LAFC vs LA Galaxy (aka El Trafico) - Saturday July 18th @ 10:30 PM on ESPN - How could I not select El Trafico? Ever since their first match against one another, these matches have been easily the most entertaining matches the league has put on.

Who's Qualifying For The Knock-Outs? - LAFC and Portland Timbers - Once again, LAFC is the best team in the league and I have no doubt they'll win the group. The second team out of this group comes down to Portland and the Galaxy, but I simply like the Timbers more.
