This B1G Week 1/25-31

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. The main story in the Big Ten right now is teams going on pause due to COVID-19 outbreaks in their programs/departments. Michigan State is finally getting back to playing this week while their in-state rivals Michigan are going on a state-imposed two-week pause causing their next four games to be postponed. Nebraska has only played twice this calendar year and won't play again until February 3rd. If the Huskers come back on the 3rd they'll have played once in 32 days and will need to play 15 games between February 3rd and March 7th.

This week we are adding a brand new segment called The Bracketology Report. In this segment we'll list out the Big Ten teams that are currently projected to be in the NCAA Tournament, and the current seed projection, based on Bracket Matrix's latest update. Bracket Matrix aggregates many of the top bracketology sites, averages each team's seed, and says who is in the tournament based on their average seeding.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Friday - 9 pm - FS1- Iowa @ Illinois - Two of the top four teams going at it on a late Friday night. I see this game as a toss-up but I am 100% certain a team from a state that starts with the letter I will win.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Saturday - 6 pm - ESPN - Kansas @ Tennessee - The Big 12 SEC Challenge has become a fun way to end January each year. The Jayhawks and Volunteers are both teams that are good but not great. Kansas is riding a three game losing streak and I think they'll turn it around once they face Rocky-Top.

Team of the Week

Penn State Nittany Lions - Penn State have quickly gotten hot. After losing their first five conference games the Nittany Lions won both games last week giving them their first winning streak since their first two games of the year.

Team of the Weak

Northwestern Wildcats - The 'Cats are in a rough rough patch. They started as the story of the league by winning their first three conference games. Now they haven't won since Boxing Day, losing seven straight games.

Bracketology Report

This B1G Week 1/18-24

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. Well, the schedule is officially getting wacky. Multiple programs (Penn State, Michigan State, and Nebraska) have all had outbreaks within their programs causing several games to be rescheduled. After going through the entire non-conference play with games only being canceled based on the non-Big Ten teams it looks like things are catching up with the league. Hopefully, everyone gets and stays healthy and we can have things off the court go just as well as they are going on the court.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Saturday - 4 pm - CBS - Ohio State @ Wisconsin - Ohio State is red hot in their last few games. Wisconsin had an up and down week having been blown out by Michigan and following it up by beating Rutgers.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Monday - 9 pm - ESPN - Kansas @ Baylor - Kicking things off with some Monday night basketball is a top ten matchup in the Big 12. Baylor had their first game this year that they won by less than double figures and Kansas is coming in being typically as strong as they are.

Team of the Week

Minnesota Golden Gophers - Michigan looked unstoppable earlier in the week when they played Wisconsin, then they went to Minnesota. The Gophers handled the Wolverines on Saturday and handed them their first loss of the season.

Team of the Weak

Northwestern Wildcats - Of the teams that haven't had to go on pause, Northwestern is probably the coldest team. The 'Cats were the hottest team in the Big Ten starting off 3-0 but have lost their last five games including two this past week.

Actual Rankings

  1. Michigan - 6-1 - 11-1
  2. Iowa - 6-1 - 12-2
  3. Wisconsin - 5-2 -11-3

This B1G Week 1/11-17

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. It's been a week. We're not going to get into it so here's This B1G Week.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Tuesday - 7 pm - ESPN - Wisconsin @ Michigan - This is the game where we could see how for real Michigan is. They've had possibly the easiest Big Ten schedule so far but that'll change on Tuesday once they face off against Wisconsin. The Badgers are looking to set themselves up for the conference crown and winning this game will go a long way.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Tuesday - 9 pm - ESPN 2 - West Virginia @ Baylor - The Baylor Bears have been dominant this season. The closest anyone has come to them is when Illinois lost to them by 13. This will be their biggest test since that game.

Team of the Week

Michigan Wolverines - While Michigan only was able to play one game this week they were very impressive in that win over Minnesota. Michigan is the only team yet to lose a Big Ten game this season and one of only 9 teams in the country that have yet to lose.

Team of the Weak

Rutgers Scarlet Knights - Rutgers started the season off extremely strong but have struggled of late. They kicked off the week by losing to MSU by 23 and ended it by losing to OSU by 11.

Actual Rankings

  1. Michigan - 5-0 - 10-0
  2. Iowa - 5-1 - 11-2
  3. Wisconsin - 4-1 - 10-2
  4. Illinois - 5-2 - 9-4
  5. Ohio State - 3-3 - 9-3
  6. Indiana - 3-3 - 8-5
  7. Purdue - 3-3 - 8-5
  8. Northwestern - 3-3 - 5-4
  9. Minnesota - 3-4 - 10-4
  10. Rutgers - 3-4 - 7-4
  11. Michigan State - 2-4 - 8-4
  12. Maryland - 2-5 - 7-6

This B1G Week 1/4-10

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. This is the very first This B1G Week of 2021, or as I like to call it Twenty Twenty Pun. Also out this week is the first NET rankings of the season are out and surprise surprise, the Big Ten has a strong presence in them. Illinois (4), Michigan (6), and Iowa (7) represent the conference in the top ten. Wisconsin (11) and Rutgers (17) fill out the top twenty for the Big Ten.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Tuesday - 9 pm - ESPN 2 - Rutgers @ Michigan State - There's no sugarcoating it, MSU has had a capital R Rough start to this Big Ten Season. They followed up their 0-2 start by getting clobbered at Minnesota and a too close for comfort victory over Nebraska. Rutgers is off to probably their best start since joining the Big Ten. This game will help us figure out if Michigan State can turn things around or if Rutgers will be competing for a top spot in the conference.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Saturday - Noon - ESPN - Texas @ West Virginia - Texas is coming off of one of the biggest road victories at Kansas on top of an already stellar season. West Virginia has been great all season as well. This makes for a banger of a game to start your Saturday off right.

Team of the Week

Iowa Hawkeyes - Iowa has surprised me a little this season. I knew their offense would be amazing, which it is, but I assumed their defense would be a garbage fire. Don't get me wrong it's still a garbage fire but the flames are a little low than I thought they'd be. The handled a red hot Northwestern squad midweek then went in and won a game at Rutgers which is hard to do regardless of crowd size.

Team of the Weak

Northwestern Wildcats - The 'Cats came back down to earth just as fast as they went up into space. They lost their two games this past week by 17 and 19 and we're too impressive. It's hard to tell which is the fluke: their first three games or these two, or more likely they fall somewhere in between.

Actual Rankings

  1. Michigan - 4-0 - 9-0
  2. Illinois - 4-1 - 8-3
  3. Iowa - 3-1 - 9-2
  4. Wisconsin - 3-1 - 9-2
  5. Minnesota - 3-2 - 10-2

This B1G Week 12/21-27

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. While I'd love to talk about the injustice that is the current state of college football, maybe check back later this week for some salty ranting, the priority as always is Big Ten Hoops. Oh boy did we have an upset yesterday. Northwestern, who was picked almost universally to finish in the bottom two of the conference, knocked-off Michigan State for their first top five victory in almost 40 years. If a team like Northwestern can win games like this, the conference is going to be insanely competitive and no one can have an off game against anyone.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Friday - 12:30 pm - Fox - Wisconsin @ Michigan State - It is a merry Christmas indeed. Wisconsin is fresh off their almost 40 point win against Louisville and MSU is trying to bounce back from an extremely disappointing loss over the weekend. If you're looking for a break from the figgy pudding and sugarplum dreams, this is a great escape.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Saturday - 4 pm - CBS - Gonzaga vs Virginia - The contrasts between these two teams is very fun. Gonzaga is the best offense in the country and Virginia is one of the best defenses. Not only is this is a big time matchup, but this is potentially the best chance for Gonzaga to lose a game during the regular season.

Team of the Week

Northwestern Wildcats - When you do something for the first time in 40 years, specifically a positive something, you make the Team of the Week. The 'Cats not only beat Michigan State but led the majority of the way.

Team of the Weak

Michigan State Spartans - When you let the other team do something for the first time in 40 years, you make Team of the Weak. Sparty had looked very up and down so far this year. They looked great against good competition but struggled against some mid-major teams. I still think they'll be toward the top of the standings but this doesn't help their case.

Actual Rankings

  1. Rutgers - 2-0 - 6-0
  2. Michigan - 1-0 - 6-0
  3. Purdue - 1-0 - 6-2
  4. Northwestern - 1-0 - 3-1
  5. Illinois - 1-1 - 5-3
  6. Iowa - 0-0 - 6-1
  7. Wisconsin - 0-0 - 6-1

2020 CFB Conference Championship Primer

It's the most wonderful time of year, as the song goes, but this year is quite different from most. And that unusualness extends to the fields and meeting rooms of college football. In a normal year, the regular season would be over and bowl season would be upon us. Instead, it's conference championship weekend.

The Covid-19 pandemic has caused dozens of postponements and schedule adjustments in college football, which in turn has led to some hot topic debates that wouldn't occur in a usual season. How many games is enough of a sample size? How do you compare teams from different conferences when there have been few non-conference games? Do mullets tangibly make a football team better?

I can't answer those questions, and I won't try to. What I will do is briefly lay out every conference championship game taking place this weekend and explain the playoff implications and possibilities.

Conference USA Championship

UAB (5-3, 3-1 Conference) @ Marshall (7-1, 4-1 Conference)

Friday, 7:00 PM, CBSSN

Spread: MARSH -4.5   Over/Under: 44

Both of these teams' most recent game came against Rice (the team, not the seed). Marshall had its immaculate season derailed by the Owls two weeks ago in a 20-0 clunker. UAB fended off Rice last week, winning 21-16. Despite their results versus the common opponent, I think Marshall is the better team here and its loss two weeks ago was an anomaly. As cool as Dragons are, I'm going to go with the Thundering Herd in this one.

Prediction: Marshall 28, UAB 17

MAC Championship

Ball State (5-1, 5-1) vs Buffalo (5-0, 5-0)

Friday, 7:30 PM, ESPN

Spread: BUFF -13   Over/Under: 69.5

We didn't get as much MACtion as usual this year, but some MACtion is better than no MACtion. The abbreviated season still gave us the same kind of ridiculousness we've come to love from the Mid-American Conference, including a game in which Buffalo running back Jaret Patterson tied the FBS record for rushing touchdowns in a game (eight). Ball State is a bad interception against Miami (OH) away from potentially being unbeaten, but Buffalo is clearly the class of the MAC.

Prediction: Buffalo 38, Ball State 24

Pac-12 Championship

Oregon (3-2, 3-2) vs #13 USC (5-0, 5-0)

Friday, 8:00 PM, FOX

Spread: USC -3  Over/Under: 64.5

The Pac-12 was the last FBS conference to get started this fall, severely limiting the playoff chances of a league that has gotten left out of three of the five College Football Playoffs. It appears that number will be four out of six after this season, but unbeaten USC does still have an outside shot. Oregon is always among the pacific elite, but the Ducks have struggled, losing their last two games. I think the Nike Ninjas will keep it close, but I expect sophomore QB Kedon Slovis to lead the Trojans to victory.

Prediction: USC 34, Oregon 32

Big Ten Championship

#14 Northwestern (6-1, 6-1) vs #4 Ohio State (5-0, 5-0)

Saturday, Noon, FOX

Spread: OSU -18.5  Over/Under: 55.5

The Big Ten, like the world in general, has been a bit of a mess this year. The conference started late, left itself little flexibility, created a rule mandating that teams must play at least six games to be eligible for the championship game, then scrapped that rule after its best team failed to reach the six-game plateau. I think the final decision was the correct one, as Ohio State is the league's only road to the Playoff. The Buckeyes should cruise against a Wildcat team that lost to Michigan State.

Prediction: Ohio State 42, Northwestern 21

Big 12 Championship

#10 Oklahoma (7-2, 6-2) vs #6 Iowa State (8-2, 8-1)

Saturday, Noon, ABC

Spread: OU -6  Over/Under: 58

The Big 12 has seemingly once again cannibalized itself out of a playoff spot, yet one of these two teams could somehow still sneak in if all hell breaks loose. If not for Florida, Iowa State would probably be the most overrated team in the country. Yes, the Cyclones squeaked by Oklahoma and Texas, but they also lost two games, including a 17-point defeat to the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns. I think Oklahoma's the better team, and I think the Sooners will get their revenge.

Prediction: Oklahoma 30, Iowa State 27

Sun Belt Championship

#19 Louisiana (9-1, 7-1) @ #12 Coastal Carolina (11-0, 8-0)

The Sun Belt Championship was canceled due to a positive Covid test

ACC Championship

#3 Clemson (9-1, 8-1) vs #2 Notre Dame (10-0, 9-0)

Saturday, 4:00 PM, ABC

Spread: CLEM -10.5  Over/Under: 60

This championship will be another rematch of a regular season game, with one small difference between the first and second meeting. This time, potential first overall pick Trevor Lawrence will start at quarterback for Clemson. Lawrence was out for the last matchup due to Covid protocols, and Notre Dame took advantage, winning in overtime. The Irish are probably firmly in the Playoff, win or lose. The Tigers are definitely in with a win. With Lawrence, I think Clemson wins relatively easily here.

Prediction: Clemson 35, Notre Dame 24

Mountain West Championship

Boise State (5-1, 5-0) vs #24 San Jose State (6-0, 6-0)

Saturday, 4:15 PM, FOX

Spread: BSU -6.5  Over/Under: 55.5

These mountainous western teams come in to Saturday's MWC championship with a combined one loss, and that loss was a Boise State beating at the hands of BYU in which the Broncos were playing their third-string quarterback. BSU will have starter Hank Bachmeier for this one, and I think he and the Blue Field Broncos will prove too talented for the Spartans of San Jose State.

Prediction: Boise State 38, San Jose State 20

SEC Championship

#1 Alabama (10-0, 10-0) vs #7 Florida (8-2, 8-2)

Saturday, 8:00 PM, CBS

Spread: ALA -17  Over/Under: 74

As usual, Alabama finds itself at the top. Even if the Crimson Tide lose by 50 points, they will likely still be put in the Playoff (now, if they lose by 51 points, that's a different story). Bama should have little trouble with a Florida team that somehow only dropped one spot in the rankings following a loss to 5-loss LSU last week.

Prediction: Alabama 48, Florida 27

American Championship

#23 Tulsa (6-1, 6-0) @ #9 Cincinnati (8-0, 6-0)

Saturday, 8:00 PM, ABC

Spread: UC -14.5  Over/Under: 45

Conference championship weekend wraps up with the SEC and AAC Saturday night. This one pits the Green Wave (which I've always assumed is just a big wave with a lot of algae in it) against the Cincinnati Bearcats. The Bearcats, who were at one point ranked seventh, dropped another spot in the rankings after having another game canceled due to Covid. UC probably won't crash the Playoff party, but the team will likely be the one to represent the non-Power 5 conferences in a New Year's 6 bowl.

Prediction: Cincinnati 35, Tulsa 21

This B1G Week 12/14-20

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. Last week was a big week for the conference. The Big Ten ended up with a lead of 6-5 over the ACC with 3 games not being able to be played. On top of that we had the first Big Ten game of the year on Sunday as Michigan barely squeaked out a win over Penn State. If this is the type of game to expect from the league this year it should be one of the best in history.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Saturday - Noon - CBS - Gonzaga vs Iowa - If you need something to throw on your second TV during the Big Ten Championship Game, where the Indiana Football Hoosiers rightfully belong (I'm not salty, you're salty), this is the best counter-programming possible. I highly expect this game to be in the 80s, if not the 90s. If you like defense this might not be the game for you but if you enjoy looking like a cat watching a tennis match this one is for you.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Saturday - 8 pm - Fox - Virginia vs Villanova - This is a great matchup if you need another break from football on Saturday. These are two of the best programs around and despite each having a disappointing loss early on are looking to compete for a national title.

Team of the Week

Iowa Hawkeyes - I was the first to doubt this Hawkeyes team and after a few weeks I still very much doubt them but I will say that at their best Iowa can beat anyone. They beat UNC by 13, in-state rival Iowa State by 28, and doubled up Northern Illinois beating them by 53. Iowa can score at will on any team in America but I still don't think they can defend on an elite enough level to go far in the tournament.

Team of the Weak

Purdue Boilermakers - Purdue gave up a 20 point lead on Tuesday in a loss to Miami (FL). The Hurricanes ended the game on a 31-10 run. They followed that up by only beating Indiana State by a dozen. The Boilers have been known to start slow in seasons past by blowing a 20 point lead in a game where you only gave up 14 points at half is very worrying.

Actual Rankings

  1. Michigan - 1-0 - 6-0
  2. Iowa - 0-0 - 6-0
  3. Michigan State - 0-0 - 6-0
  4. Minnesota - 0-0 - 6-0
  5. Ohio State - 0-0 - 5-0

This B1G Week 12/7-13

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. This is the week, the B1G Week. Big Ten ACC Challenge Week is finally upon us and it gifted us with a lot of great matchups. We have a two TV system over at Head in the Game HQ and even that might not be enough. Top off that hype with the every first Big Ten game of the year being played on Sunday. Long story short, you might not be able to contact me this week.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Wednesday - 9:15 pm - ESPN - Michigan State @ Virginia - It's very hard to pick the game of the week this week. We have multiple ranked matchups and the very first Big Ten game of the year. The Spartans got the nod here because these are two of the most consistent programs in college hoops and stylistically they matchup well with each other.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Tuesday - 5 pm - ESPN- Creighton @ Kansas - This is an excellent game leading into the Big Ten ACC Challenge. A top ten matchup with a 4 pm local time tip is a fantastic example of college basketball embracing chaos. I'm still not entirely sure what to think about either of these team but I do know this will be a fantastic game.

Team of the Week

Michigan State Spartans - MSU picked up what has been the biggest win by a Big Ten team so far in this young season. Even without fans, Duke is a very difficult place to win a game, especially when you have to play both multiple five star recruits and the refs but that's a rant for another day. Sure Sparty struggled over the weekend to beat a pair of mid-major opponents but this will be a team that gets up for big games.

Team of the Weak

Scheduling In 2020 - I have a hard time faulting any team specifically this week since no one had more than one lose and all of the loses came to Power Conference foes. Instead I wanted to show how insane scheduling has been so far in 2020 by talking about Maryland's week. The Terps were supposed to play on Tuesday against Monmouth but Monmouth had to cancel. They found a replacement game for Tuesday against Towson. Towson had to cancel. They were supposed to play George Mason on Friday. George Mason canceled. They found a replacement in Saint Peter's and by some miracle that actually got played. They had James Madison scheduled on Saturday to replace the Tuesday games. James Madison canceled. That's five games scheduled and only one that got played, none of them due to Maryland.

Actual Rankings

  1. Michigan State - 5-0
  2. Maryland - 4-0
  3. Michigan - 4-0
  4. Minnesota - 4-0
  5. Iowa - 3-0
  6. Ohio State - 3-0
  7. Rutgers - 3-0
  8. Northwestern - 2-0

This B1G Week 11/30-12/6

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. Big Ten Basketball is back and it's as fantastic as always. Sure they didn't face too sharp of competition but they took care of business and went 26-2 in the first week of the season. Things start to heat up this week just in time to prepare for the Big Ten-ACC Challenge next week and conference games starting near after.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Wednesday - 10 pm - ESPN- Baylor vs Illinois - Illinois is going to play what might be the top non-conference game for the Big Ten this year.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Saturday - 1 pm - CBS - Baylor vs Gonzaga - It's hard to top a match up of the current number 1 and number 2 teams in the AP poll. It's a perfect lead-in to watch the Top Ten ranked Indiana Football Hoosiers destroy the lowly Wisconsin Badgers. No I'm not biased.

Team of the Week

Everyone - Some people will think of this as a cop out but I think of it as being similar to 2006 when the Time Person of the Year was You. Simply put, it's just nice to have Big Ten basketball back and the fact that this season is able to happen is remarkable.

Team of the Weak

Purdue Boilermakers - The Boilers are here based solely on missed opportunities. The were the lone team to play another power conference team and the only team to lose to a power conference team. This is literally the only week this year were this performance would land them on the Team of the Weak line.

Actual Rankings

  1. Illinois - 3-0
  2. Maryland - 3-0
  3. Rutgers - 3-0
  4. Iowa - 2-0

This B1G Week 11/25-29

Hello and welcome friends to another edition of This B1G Week. After what feels like a decade, Big Ten Basketball is back! As dominant as the conference was last year, this year the league could get even better. If you want to read a more in-depth preview of the Big Ten, check out our Big Ten Basketball Preview by clicking the blue words.

This B1G Week will follow a similar format as last year's with some games to watch, the current standings, and a schedule of that week's games. The Team of the Week and Team of the Weak segments will return next week when teams have actually played games.

Big Ten Game of the Week

Wednesday - 6 pm - CBS Sports - Liberty vs Purdue - This opening week sees nearly everyone in the league facing off against mid-major opponents, except for Purdue. The Boilers face off against Liberty, a very solid mid-major program, and will go on to play a power conference foe in either Clemson or Mississippi.

Nonconference Game of the Week

Thursday - 1:30 - Fox - Gonzaga vs Kansas - One thing to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. In between your second and third plate, a top ten match up will be tipping off. The Zags will enter the year as favorites to win the whole thing and I have them as favorites to beat the Jayhawks.

Preseason Power Ranking

2020-21 College Basketball Preview

College hoops is home! The whole world changed in mid-March and it surely impacted college basketball. Not only was the entire NCAA Tournament cancelled but this season was delayed and teams are playing less games than they usually do. Much like we've seen with the college football season, games will be postponed or cancelled outright, that's just the nature of this season. Heck the Ivy League isn't even going to play Winter Sports. Yet there will be a season and there will be an NCAA Tournament. Things will look much different than normal but the rims are still 10 feet tall, it's the same height as it is in New York City and every other place in this country.

We'll be going conference by conference giving who we think will win the conference, other championship contenders, and quick thoughts on the league.

American East

Conference Champion: Vermont

Other Contenders: UMBC, Albany

One Thought: John Becker is one of the best coaches in college basketball that no one talks about and has Vermont poised to win the league. UMBC will often get the headlines due to their famous upset but Vermont is the true class of the American East.

American

Conference Champion: Houston

Other Contenders: Memphis

One Thought: A league often caught in the middle ground between Power Conference and Mid-Major, the AAC has a very strong front runner in Houston and a handful of other teams that can make a run at making the tournament.

Atlantic Sun

Conference Champion: Lipscomb

Other Contenders: Liberty

One Thought: After being one of the final teams last season to remain undefeated, Liberty looks like they won't be the clear favorite to three-peat in the league. Lipscomb has the potential to have a very potent offense that can knock off the Flames.

Atlantic Ten

Conference Champion: Richmond

Other Contenders: Saint Louis, Dayton

One Thought: The A-10 loses the National Player of the Year but gets teams in Richmond and Saint Louis that could spend time in the Top 25.

ACC

Conference Champion: Virginia

Other Contenders: Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Louisville

One Thought: Yes ACC fans, the regular season is more important than the conference tournament. The ACC is coming off of their worst season in over a decade and shouldn't be too much better as everything falls off after the fifth team.

Big 12

Conference Champion: Baylor

Other Contenders: Kansas, Texas Tech, West Virginia

One Thought: The Big 12 should be a dog fight at the top with all four of the teams listed most likely being top 15 squads.

Big East

Conference Champion: Villanova

Other Contenders: Creighton

One Thought: The addition of UCONN to the league only makes it more competitive but Villanova is the clear favorite for the league despite Creighton being a very good team as well.

Big Sky

Conference Champion: Eastern Washington

Other Contenders: Montana, North Colorado

One Thought: The Big Sky is similar to the Ohio Valley where the top three should be very competitive with themselves but the rest of the league will struggle to keep up. Eastern Washington should be the favorite in this league but will face a stiff battle from Montana and Northern Colorado.

Big South

Conference Champion: Winthrop

Other Contenders: UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern

One Thought: Winthrop is the easy favorite in the league. There's some talent below them but it would be hard to see them coming close to Winthrop in the final standings.

Big Ten

Why don't you just read our Big Ten specific preview you goofy goober.

Big West

Conference Champion: UC Irvine

Other Contenders: UC Santa Barbara

One Thought: It'll come down to the Anteaters and the team from the hometown of the greatest TV Show ever produced. *Gus from Psych voice* You know that's right.

Colonial

Conference Champion: Hofstra

Other Contenders: Charleston, Northeastern, Towson

One Thought: The CAA will only receive one bid to the NCAA tournament but the top of the league will be very competitive with each other.

Conference USA

Conference Champion: Western Kentucky

Other Contenders: North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Marshall

One Thought: Western Kentucky's roster is head and shoulders above the rest of the league with four senior starters and multiple all-conference team contenders.

Horizon

Conference Champion: Wright State

Other Contenders: Youngstown State, Northern Kentucky

One Thought: After a multi-year battle between Wright State and Northern Kentucky for conference dominance it looks like Wright State has won out for this season. With their addition to the conference, it'll be interesting to see what IPFW and Robert Morris add to the league.

Ivy League

One Thought: The Ivy League isn't playing Winter Sports this year so don't get a conference preview this year.

MAAC

Conference Champion: Siena

Other Contenders: Iona, Monmouth, Saint Peter's

One Thought: Siena is the most talented team but the big storyline of the conference is Rick Pitino's  return to coaching college basketball.

Mid-American

Conference Champion: Bowling Green State

Other Contenders: Buffalo, Akron, Ball State

One Thought: The single A MAC should be ultra competitive this year with many very guard heavy teams. Justin Turner returning the BGSU after toying with the transfer market is huge for the league as he got a lot of interest from some major conference teams.

MEAC

Conference Champion: North Carolina Central

Other Contenders: Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, Morgan State, Howard

One Thought: Howard made headlines this offseason with the commitments of 5-Star recruit Makur Maker (younger brother of Thon Maker) and top transfer Nojel Eastern (from Purdue). HBUCs (which make up the majority of the MEAC) have often struggled to recruit due to a lack of financial resources but things like this make it look like the tide is turning on the height of their recruiting levels.

Missouri Valley

Conference Champion: Loyola-Chicago

Other Contenders: Northern Iowa

One Thought: One of the few conferences that was able to complete their tournament before everything got canceled, the MVC should be a two horse race with two very talented teams. Northern Iowa was competing for an at-large bid last season and Loyola-Chicago is going to start five seniors.

Mountain West

Conference Champion: San Diego State

Other Contenders: Utah State, Boise State, Colorado State, UNLV

One Thought: SDSU was one of the teams the have to feel for most once the tournament got canceled. They should still be a very strong team, just not as great as last year.

Northeast

Conference Champion: Fairleigh Dickinson

Other Contenders: Bryant, LIU, Mount Saint Mary's

One Thought: As much as I like how the NEC will be very competitive at the top of their league, I am too busy trying to start a justice for Merrimack movement. In their first season as a Division One school Merrimack won the conference outright but we're eligible to compete in the conference tournament or the NCAA/NIT tournaments due to an outdated rule of the NCAA where teams cannot compete in NCAA sponsored post-season tournaments for the first one-two season in D1.

Ohio Valley

Conference Champion: Murray State

Other Contenders: Austin Peay, Belmont

One Thought: The OVC was one of the few conference that were able to complete their conference tournament last season so we know Belmont would've gone dancing. This year will come down to what it has each of the last few years, to the trio of Murray State, Austin Peay, and Belmont.

Pac-12

Conference Champion: Oregon

Other Contenders: UCLA, Stanford, Arizona, Arizona State

One Thought: The Pac-12 was the surprise Power Six conference of last year and have five teams that have a legitimate shot at the conference crown.

Patriot

Conference Champion: Colgate

Other Contenders: Loyola Maryland, Boston, Bucknell, Lehigh

One Thought: The Patriot was the last conference to be able to play their tournament title game before being shut down. Colgate played in that game and will be the favorite to win a league that will have a very competitive top half.

SEC

Conference Champion: Kentucky

Other Contenders: Tennessee

One Thought: After a down year in 2019-20, the SEC looks to have bounced back with two title-contenders and an additional six team with a chance at the tournament.

SoCon

Conference Champion: Furman

Other Contenders: UNC Greensboro

One Thought: The SoCon has been a delightful league the past few seasons and they'll once again be super competitive. Expect to see some power conference teams lose to SoCon teams in nonconference play.

Southland

Conference Champion: Stephen F Austin

Other Contenders: Nicholls State, Abilene Christian

One Thought: Stephen F Austin has been a powerhouse in this league the last decade and, while Nicholls State and Abilene Christian will be competitive, that dominance won't fade this year.

SWAC

Conference Champion: Texas Southern

Other Contenders: Southern, Prairie View A&M, Jackson State

One Thought: After a few years of dominance it looks like someone will finally take over at the top of the SWAC from Prairie View A&M.

Summit

Conference Champion: South Dakota State

Other Contenders: North Dakota State, South Dakota

One Thought: The Jackbunnies return nearly everyone from last year's conference co-champion making them the clear favorites.

Sun Belt

Conference Champion: Arkansas Little Rock

Other Contenders: Georgia State

One Thought: There are really only one team in the Sun Belt that looks like it can compete with Little Rock and that is Georgia State. Both teams are capable of taking down power conference teams should they get the chance to play them.

West Coast

Conference Champion: Gonzaga

Other Contenders: BYU, San Francisco

One Thought: Gonzaga is easily the class of this conference, possible all of college basketball. Other contenders were only listed out of obligation.

WAC

Conference Champion: New Mexico State

Other Contenders: Grand Canyon

One Thought: The question for the WAC is the same is it is every year: can anyone compete with New Mexico State? The Aggies have won the regular season title in 6 of the last 7 seasons and have represented the conference in 8 of the last 10 NCAA tournaments.
